A separate report said Mateta’s case was heard by an independent tribunal under Premier League rules before being taken to FIFA, with the outcome not disclosed, while Palace insisted the contract remains binding.
Mateta’s dispute centers on whether the extension option should be annulled, with the player seeking to treat the last year as void and to move on from Selhurst Park at the end of the season.
The BBC also noted Mateta played 63 minutes for Palace in their Premier League opener at Everton, a detail Palace used to frame the dispute as effectively settled.
Transfer window pressure
As the closing days of the transfer window approached, the BBC described the dispute as leaving Palace with a transfer decision, with interest from rival clubs heading into the deadline.
The BBC said Aston Villa are among the clubs credited with an admiration for Mateta, with Ollie Watkins’ future in doubt at the midlands club.
Aston Villa made an enquiry about Mateta as the contract dispute went to FIFA, according to Birmingham Live, which said Palace had no intention to sell their talisman.
Birmingham Live also stated that no concrete offer had been made for the 29-year-old, while noting Mateta’s case was heard by an independent tribunal under Premier League rules and that FIFA ruled it was not within its governance.
With Mateta’s contract due to expire at the end of 2026/27, the BBC said Palace’s position meant the dispute was closed from the club’s perspective, even as Mateta sought to force an earlier exit.
What happens next
The BBC framed the practical stakes for Palace around the timing of any potential transfer, saying the window was their last opportunity to recoup money in transfer fees before Mateta could sign a Bosman pre-contract with an overseas club in January.

In parallel, Goal reported that FIFA rejected Mateta’s contractual claim and that the independent tribunal under Premier League rules ruled in favor of Crystal Palace, deeming the contract legally valid and fully binding.
Goal added that Mateta is under contract with Crystal Palace until June 30, 2027, while his legal team had sought to argue that the last two months of his contract should be considered invalid.
With the dispute unresolved in Mateta’s favor, the BBC said Palace are likely to listen to offers for Mateta, while Mateta’s own actions indicated he views his future away from Selhurst Park.
