Joe Root Returns As England Test Captain After Ben Stokes Retirement, Fleming Appointed Coach

Joe Root was reappointed England’s Test captain after Ben Stokes relinquished the role and retired from international cricket, with Root taking back the job temporarily for the fourth Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

Stephen Fleming was confirmed as England’s new men’s Test head coach, and the London Evening Standard said Fleming was “I’m incredibly excited to be joining England as Test coach.”L

The BBC said Root will begin his second stint as full-time captain against Pakistan at Headingley on 19 August, with Fleming joining up with the team ahead of December’s tour of South Africa.

The Guardian reported Fleming has signed a four-year contract to September 2030 and replaces Brendon McCullum, who was sacked earlier this month after England’s poor performance in the Ashes followed by a series defeat at home to New Zealand.

In the same BBC report, Root said he is in a “very different place” to when he stepped down four years ago, after describing the captaincy as “a very unhealthy relationship, the captaincy and me” in June 2022.

After being confirmed as England’s men’s full-time Test skipper, Root starred for Welsh Fire in The Hundred, moving them to joint top of the table with a chase anchored by his 58no.

Sky Sports said Root “anchored the Fire's chase, taking his new franchise home with four balls still in hand,” and it described Phil Salt’s 46 from 36 balls with four sixes before he was trapped in front by Mitch Owen (1-9).S

Sky Sports also quoted Root speaking on Sky Sports Cricket: “That is how you want to play cricket, being ruthless and getting it done at the end.”S

The BBC’s account of Root’s return framed the captaincy shift as a change in mindset, with Root saying: “Hopefully we can work and build on a lot of the good things that have happened over the last four years.”

Root’s return is tied directly to Fleming’s appointment, with News18 saying Root told the ECB: “If I’m being brutally honest, it (Fleming’s appointment) was a big reason why I wanted to do it.”

The ICC report said Root wants to retain the best elements of what England built since 2022 while evolving their style, and it quoted him in an ECB video: “We'll try to continue a lot of the good stuff we did over that period and not finding ourselves back to where we were before Baz [Brendon McCullum] and Ben [Stokes] took over.”

The Guardian said the ECB described Fleming as “one of the most highly regarded coaches in world cricket” and noted he has experience largely in the white-ball game, including Chennai Super Kings and its subsidiaries.

In the BBC’s account, Root linked his approach to the “shift in mindset” created over the last four years, saying: “trying to strip the fear away from things, make sure guys feel that they can really just allow their talent to come out as frequently as possible.”

The BBC also said Root and Fleming inherit a side in disarray after series defeats in Australia and at home by New Zealand, and it reported that criticism of England’s carefree playing style followed the Bazball era’s disappointing conclusion when Stokes retired in June and McCullum was sacked a fortnight later.
