Justin Drake Urges Ethereum And Bitcoin Holders Into Bunker Mode Against AI Signature Break Risk
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake calls for 'bunker mode' to migrate funds due to AI threats. He recommends controlled mass migration to addresses with unexposed public keys; no attack demonstrated.

Drake’s bunker mode push
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the blockchain industry to prepare for “bunker mode” by planning a controlled migration of assets to fresh addresses whose public keys have never been exposed. Drake warned that AI could find a way to break the mathematics protecting bitcoin and ether wallet signatures in the worst case “in months, not years.” Drake said a wallet uses a secret number called a private key to authorize payments, while a related public key lets the network check those approvals, and he argued AI might help someone recover the secret from the public key.
Drake tied his warning to OpenAI’s release of 722 mathematical manuscripts produced by an unreleased model tested on approximately 4,000 research problems, and he said the crypto industry should treat the pace of AI-driven mathematics as a security timeline shift. Drake also said no practical attack on bitcoin or Ethereum’s wallet keys has been demonstrated, and he pointed to the elliptic-curve signature system as the part he believes could be most vulnerable to AI-assisted shortcuts.

Buterin urges calm
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin backed Drake’s warning while urging holders not to rush, writing, “I don't recommend anyone scramble to move their funds to new wallets today.” Buterin said the risk deserves serious attention and added, “But we should take the risks to cryptography from AI-accelerated math seriously.” Buterin extended the concern beyond elliptic curves by warning that lattice-based cryptography could face “serious hits” within the next two years due to AI-driven mathematical advances.
Buterin argued that keeping funds in addresses that have never signed a transaction can reduce exposure because their public keys remain hidden behind address hashes, while he cautioned that migration mistakes can cause losses. Buterin’s response also aligned with Drake’s core precaution of moving to fresh addresses, while emphasizing that “a rushed migration would do more harm than good” rather than treating the warning as an immediate emergency.

What changes next
Drake recommended that large and sophisticated holders begin a gradual move first, and he said the process should be calm rather than a stampede to avoid errors and direct losses. Drake said he would “be pushing for maximum defensive acceleration” on Ethereum’s post-quantum shift, and he argued that exiting bunker mode safely “will require post-AI cryptography.” Drake described his personal preference as going “all-in on hash-based cryptography” and avoiding structured mathematical assumptions from curves, lattices, or isogenies.
“Exiting bunker mode safely will require post-AI cryptography.”
Drake also said wallets holding under 50 BTC enjoy partial cover from “Satoshi's shield,” and he described “20K exposed addresses” tied to Bitcoin’s creator as holding 50 BTC each. CoinDesk reported that BitcoinBTC$82,371.15 extended its slide during Asian hours, dipping to about $82,300 before recovering to around $82,800, while the CoinDesk 100 lost close to 2% over 24 hours as Drake’s warning circulated.
