Bankruptcy threat in DC
Leaders of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC say the institution is on the brink of bankruptcy and could close as early as Tuesday, according to the Washington Post reports cited by Reuters.R

Reuters reported that the leaders installed by U.S. RPresident Donald Trump argue that putting the president’s name on its facade may be the only way to avoid imminent and “certain fiscal collapse,” and that within a few weeks the center may be unable to pay employees or meet maintenance costs.
The New York Times reported that officials warned the center faces “certain fiscal collapse within weeks” unless President Trump’s name is added back to the building in some fashion.
The New York Times also said a federal judge, Christopher R. Cooper, ruled months ago that Trump’s name should be removed because Congress needed to approve the renaming as the “Trump-Kennedy Center.”
Trump name as condition
CNN reported that a draft resolution circulated to the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees warns of “certain fiscal collapse” within weeks unless President Donald Trump’s name is added back to the building, and says the center risks being unable to make payroll or pay routine maintenance contracts.
CNN also quoted board member and longtime Trump ally Paolo Zampolli saying, “Trump attracts money,” and added that when Trump says donate to the place, “everyone will donate.”
The New York Times reported that the draft resolution presents 10 options for how to add Mr. Trump’s name below the main signage on the front of the center.
The New York Times further said the draft resolution states the board understands that without “appropriate recognition” it is unlikely Trump will provide “the fundamental oversight of the renovation of the main building and lead the fiscal rescue of the center.”
Safety, closure, and legal fight
Alongside the bankruptcy warning, the Washington Post documents described by France 24 say the board of trustees is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to close the main building due to financial and safety needs, and officials warn the center could be unable to make payroll or pay routine maintenance contracts within weeks.F

France 24 reported that a severe storm earlier this month damaged the building when a “roughly four-by-five-foot section of ceiling plaster broke loose in the Grand Foyer and fell about 60 feet,” and that no one was hurt.F
The Guardian reported that the center’s vice-president of public relations Roma Daravi said in a statement, “Another example of the urgent need to close for renovation and revitalization,” and blamed “decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by the previous leadership.”
The Guardian also reported that the trustees’ report was prepared in advance of a meeting scheduled for Tuesday and said the main building was flagged for immediate closure based on maintenance backlog and safety concerns tied to the building’s condition.
