ProPublica said Kremlev paid to rent out one of the private islands where a reception was held and where guests slept, and also covered other big-ticket items like a fireworks show, with the guest list numbering around 50 and including Jared Kushner and Eric Trump.

The Hill reported that Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) asked, “Why did a Russian oligarch close to Putin fund Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas?”

In response, Bettina Trump confirmed on Instagram that Kremlev was a “dear friend” who “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding.”

Pushback and Competing Frames

Bettina Trump’s Instagram post pushed back on the framing of Kremlev’s involvement as political, writing, “Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda.”

Newsweek reported that she clarified the Russian-linked celebration was separate from the wedding itself, saying, “Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding.”

ProPublica also quoted national security experts expressing alarm, including Frank Montoya Jr., who said, “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something.”

The Hill reported that Garcia demanded answers, writing, “Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President’s son. What did he get in return? We need answers,” while the White House did not respond to requests for comment in the reporting described by ProPublica.

Access, Oversight, and Fallout

ProPublica described Kremlev as the head of the International Boxing Association and said the wedding payments came from an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai that the boxing association uses for financial transactions.

“an extraordinary development”

ProPublica also said Kremlev’s previously unreported relationship with Trump Jr. represented “an extraordinary development,” because it put a member of Putin’s circle in position to gain intimate access to the Trump family.

The Hill reported that Garcia’s question was tied to potential conflicts of interest, writing, “Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President’s son. What did he get in return? We need answers,” as the couple continued to insist the weekend was a personal gift.

In the Daily Mail account, Bettina Trump said the Russian national was “our dear friend Umar,” and she ended her statement with “NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY,” while the reporting also noted that Donald Trump did not attend the wedding, citing “national security responsibilities as the war withIranescalated.”D
