Elephants Die in Amboseli

Kenya Wildlife Service is investigating the deaths of 15 elephants in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park ecosystem after the animals were found dead between June 24 and July 24, 2026 in the Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Ranch area.

The Kenya Wildlife Service said preliminary tests detected a “potential toxic substance,” while separate analyses by the Government Chemist were negative for the toxins tested, and further tests are underway.

The deaths were recorded in Amboseli National Park, Kimana Sanctuary and the Kuku Ranch area, and KWS said the condition mainly affected adult female elephants and their calves, with only one male among the dead.

Toxicity, Paralysis, and Dispute

KWS communications Director Duncan Wanyama told Mongabay that “Ten elephants exhibited similar clinical signs, including partial paralysis that left them unable to stand before dying within one to two days,” and that the remaining five carcasses were too decomposed or scavenged to establish cause of death.

Wanyama said preliminary laboratory investigations found a toxic substance in the dead elephants, but the Government Chemist’s results were negative for toxic substances tested, while “Further quantitative analysis is underway,” according to KWS.

The Eastleigh Voice reported KWS Director General Prof. TErastus Kanga confirmed cyanide poisoning after preliminary laboratory analysis detected traces of cyanide, pointing to agricultural chemicals as the likely cause.

In that account, Kanga said the cyanide came after ingesting pesticides sprayed on nearby tomato farms, while KWS maintained “there is currently no evidence to suggest the contamination poses a risk to human health.”

Calls for Answers and Monitoring

Local leaders pressed for clarity as Joseph ole Lenku, the governor of Kajiado County, said at a public event, “We have never seen something like this. We want a report stating exactly what killed our elephants.”

KWS said it intensified surveillance across the Amboseli ecosystem and continued to monitor elephant populations closely, including after some elephants were equipped with tracking devices that authorities said stopped moving.

IFAW Kenyan country director Ben Wandago said, “This incident is deeply alarming,” adding that “When we lose elephants on this scale, the impact reaches far beyond a single herd.”

KWS also said environmental investigations were underway, including analysis of water sources and other potential environmental contaminants within the affected areas, to establish whether the elephants were exposed to a common source.
