Kherson truce ends
A localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Kherson region ended on Sunday night, with no violations reported by either side and no sign of an extension. The truce, brokered with the help of US First Lady Melania Trump and limited to the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky and the surrounding area, began early on Tuesday and was set to expire at 10:59pm Ukraine time (20:59 GMT). The pause enabled a humanitarian mission to Oleshky and allowed hundreds of besieged residents to be evacuated in a rare joint operation between Kyiv and Moscow.
Ukraine’s General Staff said it evacuated 167 civilians to safer points in the Kherson region, including 22 children and 21 people with limited mobility requiring special assistance. Ukraine’s Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, confirmed that "The ceasefire, which was in effect from October 27 to November 1, has ended".
Evacuation and warnings
Melania Trump said on social media that the ceasefire across Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region had provided residents with "freedom to move, access to food, clean water, medicine".
Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin urged residents to be vigilant as the expiry neared, warning people not to visit the so-called "red zones" near the Dnipro [River].
Ukraine’s air alert system was apparently hacked on Sunday evening, and Ukraine’s air force said the Air Alarm application had been subjected to hostile interference while it insisted "There is no radiation threat! Stay calm and follow our updates on our channel."
Zelenskyy said Russia struck energy infrastructure in four regions overnight on Saturday, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without power, and some connections were restored on Sunday.
The BBC reported that the localised ceasefire was due to end at 22:59 Ukrainian time (21:00 GMT) on Sunday, while fighting continued elsewhere.
Aftermath and broader strikes
Zelenskyy said Russia continued to target Ukraine’s energy systems before winter, and he described the intensity of strikes as "extremely high" over the past week. The BBC said repair works to restore power continued throughout the day, with more than 60,000 people still without power in the Dnipropetrovsk region and emergency power cuts introduced across the country. Al Jazeera reported that Russian strikes elsewhere in Ukraine on Sunday left hundreds of thousands of households without power, and it also described major damage to an industrial site in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region after Ukrainian drone attacks.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Moscow’s forces attacked Ukraine with 433 drones overnight, of which 371 were destroyed or suppressed, and the same report said more than 100 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the skies of Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region. France 24 with AFP said a Ukrainian official told AFP Kyiv’s foreign ministry had offered an extension but "the Russians don't want to."
