Elephant and Castle fall

A man, a woman and a child died after falling from a high-rise block of flats in Elephant and Castle, south London, with the Metropolitan police saying officers were called at 7.29am on Wednesday to reports that people had fallen from a height.

The BBC said the emergency services were called to Churchyard Row in Elephant and Castle at 07:29 BST on Wednesday following reports that people had fallen from height, and that all three were pronounced dead despite attempts to resuscitate them.

The London Ambulance Service said its crews were on the scene within four minutes, and a paramedic arrived in around four minutes, while the London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance were also dispatched.

The deaths were being treated as unexpected, and the Metropolitan police said there were no other reported injuries as work began to formally identify the three victims and inform their next of kin.

Investigations and witness accounts

TheMetropolitan Police said the deaths were currently being treated as unexpected, and it said detectives were investigating after three people died following a fall from height on Wednesday, 27 May.

The My London report quoted a Met Police spokesperson urging witnesses to come forward by calling 101, quoting CAD 1613/27MAY, and it said work was underway to formally identify those who died.

A resident described to The Telegraph that she had heard screaming “for the last two weeks” coming from nearby her flat, and she said police knocked on her door and asked if she had heard shouting and screaming.

The Telegraph also reported that video taken by neighbours, and seen by The Telegraph, confirmed the three people who died fell behind the south face of the building, with paramedics performing CPR on one of the victims as dozens of officers swarmed the area.

What happens next

Building management firm Uncle told residents in an email that police are on site and they are assisting the authorities, and it said “There is no risk to residents, and everything is operating as normal.”

The BBC reported that the next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, while work is under way to formally identify those who died.

The London Ambulance Service spokesperson said “Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, three people were pronounced dead at the scene,” as the investigation continued into the circumstances of the fall.

The Metropolitan police said officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service, London's Air Ambulance and the London Fire Brigade, and it added that there were no other reported injuries as authorities urged witnesses to contact police.
