Rubio orders departure
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the Iranian delegation to leave New York after indirect talks between Washington and Tehran reached a dead end, according to Axios as cited by news.sbs.co.kr.
The Iranian delegation left New York in the early hours of September 29, after the delegation headed to the airport a few hours later on September 28, according to news.sbs.co.kr.

Iran’s UN mission rejected the expulsion claim as baseless, saying the delegation left the United States according to its planned schedule and that its travel schedule had been communicated to the U.S. Department of State in advance.
Iran’s UN mission accused the U.S. Department of State of spreading “baseless and worthless” reports, after Axios reported Rubio ordered the delegation to leave the United States immediately on Monday evening.
The Iranian mission to the United Nations said the delegation left New York on Monday evening local time in accordance with the program communicated to the U.S. State Department on September 17, according to Al-Arabi Al-Jadid.
Competing accounts on timing
An Anadolu Ajansı report said a U.S. official told it that Rubio ordered the diplomats to leave after negotiations stalled, and it quoted the U.S. mission telling Iran the delegation had to leave New York "immediately."
Iran’s UN mission told Anadolu Ajansı that the delegation left New York on Monday evening in accordance with the schedule communicated to the U.S. Department of State in advance on September 17.
An Al-Arabi Al-Jadid account said Tehran replied to reports that the United States asked the Iranian delegation to leave New York, confirming the departure was preplanned according to a schedule communicated to the U.S. State Department.
The Iranian UN mission wrote on X that the U.S. Department of State, “which did not gain any leverage, resorted to broadcasting baseless and worthless news” in response to Axios’s report.
The dispute also extended to the flight details, with Anadolu Ajansı saying the delegation boarded a flight from New York to Doha at 1.20 am local time (0520GMT) Tuesday.
Mediation and wider stakes
Qatari mediators continued talks with both sides on a compromise proposal after the departure dispute, according to Anadolu Ajansı.
Al-Arabi Al-Jadid said the spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Majed Al-Ansari, confirmed that Qatar would continue its mediation between Tehran and Washington and work to build a common ground between the two sides.
Al-Arabi Al-Jadid reported that Al-Ansari urged Iran to decide to keep Gulf Cooperation Council countries out of the war and to maintain a clear stance against aggression toward its neighbors.
Al-Arabi Al-Jadid also said Al-Ansari warned of the war’s repercussions and escalation on the global economy that are intolerable, and more dangerous as winter approaches.
news.sbs.co.kr said U.S. President Donald Trump was seeking an agreement with Iran with the midterm elections one month away, after the episode unfolded around the UN General Assembly in New York.
