Rubio: head for an eye
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned early Thursday that President Donald Trump is prepared to direct an outsized military response to Iranian aggression, responding to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s “eye for an eye” statement.

Rubio told reporters at an ASEAN summit in Manila, Philippines, “The president’s policy is a head for an eye,” adding, “I mean honestly, that’s what it’s going to be.”
The threats follow a brief period of optimism last month after the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding that initiated a halt in fighting and renewed peace talks, but both Tehran and Washington alleged the other side violated the ceasefire terms.
The Hill reported that Araghchi issued his warning Wednesday in a post on X, writing, “Any aggression against Iran, including our infrastructure, will compel a powerful and decisive response.”
Trump links strikes to Iran
In a Thursday statement, Trump warned that any future strikes from the Iran-backed Houthis would be met with direct punishment of Iran, after the Yemen-based group attacked two Saudi Arabian oil tankers in the Red Sea on Wednesday night.

The New York Post quoted Rubio saying, “The president’s policy is a head for an eye,” after Rubio responded to Araghchi’s “an eye for an eye” remarks at the ASEAN meeting of foreign ministers in the Philippines.
The New York Post also reported Trump’s Wednesday threat that “the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT,” including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran, if Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
Congress and the war’s next phase
The Washington Post said the House on Wednesday passed its $1.15 trillion defense policy bill and advanced a measure to help cover the rising costs of the Iran war, with Republicans steamrolling Democrats who argued that Congress is failing to restrain the Trump administration’s expansive use of military force.

The Washington Post framed the vote as part of a broader dispute over whether Congress is restraining the administration, with Democrats demanding an immediate vote to restrain Trump on Iran and later Senate votes to block Trump from resuming the Iran war.
In parallel, the WORLD News Group account described behind-the-scenes diplomacy continuing even though peace talks have not formally restarted, with Iranian spokesman Esmaeil Bagaei confirming on Monday that mediators were sending Iran drafts of peace proposals ahead of indirect negotiations.
Rubio told reporters that the U.S. goal was a denuclearized Iran, saying, “I think the US is seeking a denuclearized Iran that will never have a nuclear weapon,” while also warning that “I don't think they're serious about making a deal.”
