Sanctions and dialogue

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned US sanctions against Iran as “inhumane,” saying Tehran will not bow to pressure despite Washington’s attempts to force it into submission. Pezeshkian made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on the sidelines of the 17th Summit of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan, Armenia.

Pezeshkian said, “These sanctions are beyond the bounds of humanity,” and he added that Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons while it considers “the destructive propaganda against our country to be false.” Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran had always been ready for dialogue, stressing that while some believe they can force the country to surrender, “we will not submit to coercion.”

Bank sanctions dispute

The International Development Bank for Investment and Financing rejected US Treasury sanctions, saying it “absolutely rejects the information and claims” after the Treasury imposed measures due to “relations with Iran and Iraqi militias.” The bank’s administration said it was “full readiness to cooperate with the Iraqi Central Bank and the US Treasury, through official and legal channels, to address the file, clarify the facts, and defend the bank’s reputation.”

The US Treasury said the International Development Bank for Investment and Financing provides financial facilitation services and access to US dollars to benefit Iran, and it said the bank has abused its access to the US dollar clearance in a currency auction that has now been resolved. The US Treasury also said the bank was initially established by Iranian companies to support the Iranian economy and supply Iran with US dollars, and it said the Iranian counterpart bank Mabna (Mall) was closed due to US sanctions and its capital redirected to the International Development Bank.

Hormuz, escalation, and OFAC

The U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions including 16 individuals and 10 entities linked to Iran, and it imposed strict financial restrictions on transactions involving the Bank for International Development for Investment and Financing.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said the sanctions targeted “a complex network comprising 16 individuals and 10 entities” accused of facilitating circumvention of commercial and financial activities in favor of Iranian funding networks and weapons programs.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said the Strait of Hormuz is Iran's first line of defense and will not be opened without its permission, and the representative of the Supreme Leader to the IRGC, Abdullah Hajji Sadeqi, said the strait is “the first line of defense of the revolution.”

The spokesperson for the Iranian army said, “we have plans that will force American vessels to stay farther from our shores,” and the Iranian army commander, Amir Hatami, said the Strait of Hormuz is under full surveillance by the army and the IRGC.
