Anthony Boyle stars as Sam Bankman-Fried, and Julia Garner plays Caroline Ellison in the eight-episode series.

Graham Moore said he was fascinated from the start by the real-life story of Sam and Caroline, adding that they were characters that would be hard to create even if someone tried to make them up.
Netflix plans to take a full look through the series at the FTX scandal and the two people at its center, with the trailer already available.
Creator comments and on-screen lines
Graham Moore said, "I genuinely believe that both Sam and Caroline were deeply committed altruists from day one, who set out to do as much good for as many people as they could in their lives," in connection with the series.
Graham Moore added, "Over the course of the years that our show depicts, Sam and Caroline, with the very best of intentions, talked each other and themselves into committing a number of terrible crimes."
A.V. Club quoted Ellison saying in the trailer, "Going all-in is the only mathematically optimal strategy," and it quoted Bankman-Fried saying, "There’s no such thing as criminals. There’s only people that get caught."
A.V. Club also said the series premieres on Netflix on November 19 and described the trailer as taking another hit for "Tech bros" in its framing of the release.
FTX fallout and what’s next
Business Insider said the series dramatizes the massive multibillion-dollar fraud scheme that led to the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried's cryptocurrency empire, FTX. Business Insider said Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced in 2024 to 25 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of all seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, and it said he remains behind bars at a low-security federal prison in California.

Business Insider said Ellison had pleaded guilty to conspiring with Bankman-Fried and served about 11 months in prison, and it said she was recently hired at Manifund, a grantmaking platform. The Defiant said Netflix’s synopsis for "The Altruists" calls it "a toxic love story inspired by a real fraud," and it said the trailer drew 4.2 million views in seven hours.
