Nigel Farage Faces Count Binface in Clacton By-Election After Finance Pressure

Nigel Farage triggered a special parliamentary election in Clacton after coming under pressure over his finances, and he is now running against Count Binface, a novelty candidate in a trash-can costume, in a by-election expected to be held on Thursday.

Count Binface, a character played by writer and comedian Jon Harvey, 46, describes himself as an “intergalactic space warrior” from the planet Sigma IX and told The Associated Press, “I’m the only fresh thing on the menu.”

The major political parties refused to take part, leaving Farage facing a ballot that includes “nearly three dozen candidates,” with the AP describing Binface as the default challenger after the boycotts.

A Survation poll cited by multiple outlets put Farage at 73% of the vote and Binface at 20%, while the BBC and other coverage framed the contest as a “people versus the establishment” by-election Farage said he wanted.

Farage’s resignation and the decision by mainstream parties not to field candidates have been described as a response to scrutiny over a gift of five million pounds that he “failed to disclose,” with the New York Times saying other parties called it a political stunt to distract from a parliamentary investigation.

Count Binface’s campaign has leaned into spectacle while insisting on democratic participation, and he told the Associated Press, “You’re all sick of these politicians, as good as they’re trying to be, but you know you need something different, a little bit of secret sauce.”

The New York Times also reported that Binface would be interviewed only in character and argued that even if Farage “wins even with an increased majority,” it would be “against 33 candidates including an alien shaped like a trash can, who’s won?”

The AP reported that if Farage wins, the parliamentary investigation into his finances will resume, and it said a finding of wrongdoing could lead to Farage being suspended from Parliament and trigger yet another special election for the seat.
