Farage triggers by-election
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, announced on Tuesday that he would resign as a Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, forcing a by-election in which he plans to run again.

At a press conference, the 62-year-old politician said, “I thought about it hard, and I’ve decided today, I will resign as a member of parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, thereby forcing a by-election,” and he framed the contest as “a people versus the establishment by-election.”

EFE reported that the move came after revelations that Farage failed to declare to Parliament donations received from George Cottrell, a British aristocrat convicted in the United States, which could constitute a violation of House rules.
The scrutiny centers on a £5 million donation from cryptocurrency magnate Christopher Harborne, with ABC News saying Farage is facing a probe by Parliament’s standards watchdog over a 5 million pound ($6.7 million) gift.
Rivals refuse to contest
As Farage pushed for the by-election, POLITICO reported that all the main rival parties vowed to stay out, with Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, Restore Britain and the Green Party all refusing to play along.
POLITICO quoted Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch saying, “What I saw was a man who is cracking under the pressure,” and it added that the Conservatives confirmed they would not contest the seat.

CNN reported that on Tuesday night all three of the UK’s historically largest parties—the Labour Party, the right-wing Conservative Party and the centrist Liberal Democrats—announced they would not put forward candidates in the special election.
In response to the controversy, Farage told the public, “Let me be absolutely clear, I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all,” and CNN said the probe would be suspended until he is re-elected.
Investigations and political stakes
EFE said that following Farage’s resignation, the investigations have been suspended pending the outcome of the election, but would resume if he were to be re-elected.

The same report described how Farage was already facing another parliamentary investigation before the Cottrell case came to light, having failed to inform the House about a “gift” of 5 million pounds (5.8 million euros) from Christopher Harborne before his election.
CNN added that if Farage loses the by-election, the standards commissioner will decide whether or not to resume the investigation, according to official protocol, and it noted that the ruling Labour Party is expected to appoint a new leader in less than two weeks.
In the background of the political reshuffle, EFE said that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation a few weeks earlier, and on Tuesday he described Farage’s snap election as a desperate move as he is in over his head in a corruption scandal.
