Sora and Atlas shut down
OpenAI is shutting down its Sora AI video platform, with the Sora app and the broader video platform closing as OpenAI refocuses its strategy, and the Hollywood Reporter says Disney’s $1 billion deal is dead and buried.
In parallel, OpenAI is sunsetting the ChatGPT Atlas browser less than a year after launch, with Atlas reaching the end of the road on August 9, 2026.

Android Authority says OpenAI decided to shut down ChatGPT Atlas alongside three updates rolled out with today’s GPT 5.6 announcement, while PCMag reports the retirement follows the introduction of a more powerful ChatGPT desktop app that offers its own browsing capabilities.
The Verge frames the Atlas shutdown as happening “less than a year after launching it,” and ties it to OpenAI’s push to reduce “side quests” and catch up with Anthropic on productivity features.
Work mode and desktop integration
OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 rollout is paired with new agentic product direction, as Crypto Briefing says ChatGPT Work launches as an agent inside ChatGPT designed to handle longer and more complex workplace tasks across apps, files, and workflows.
Crypto Briefing says ChatGPT Work can gather information from connected tools and turn it into finished materials such as spreadsheets, slide decks, documents, web apps, dashboards, campaign briefs, and project trackers.

Android Authority reports that alongside the Atlas shutdown, OpenAI’s browser team is rolling out updates including a more robust ChatGPT desktop app in-app browser with support for multiple tabs, a password manager, and autofill.
TechCrunch adds that OpenAI is redistributing Atlas’s agentic browsing features into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Google Chrome extension, positioning the browser as a feature rather than the destination.
Strategy shift and business stakes
OpenAI’s product cancellations are presented as part of a broader refocus toward business and developers, with Tech Insider saying the Sora shutdown comes on March 24, 2026, and Frandroid reporting OpenAI’s decision was taken because the platform’s costs were prohibitively high.
“ChatGPT Work launches with GPT-5”
Tech Insider says Sora’s official account posted on X on March 24, 2026 with the message “We say goodbye to the Sora app,” and it adds that the next day, March 25, 2026, OpenAI officially closes the Sora project and permanently removes all video features from the app.
MacGeneration quotes Fidji Simo telling her team, “We really need to focus on productivity in general, and more specifically on the business side,” while TechCrunch links the Atlas shutdown to OpenAI’s CEO of applications cutting back on “side quests.”
PCMag notes that Atlas launched in October for macOS and that the Windows version of ChatGPT Atlas has been canceled, as OpenAI pivots to “ChatGPT Work” and a desktop app that combines Codex, a built-in browser, and the new Work agent.
