Arrest After Homecoming Shooting
Authorities arrested Ziyaire Antonyo Spinks, 20, in connection with a shooting during homecoming weekend at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina that left one person dead and at least one other person injured. Assistant Police Chief Jason Swaim of the Winston-Salem Police Department said officers responded after hearing gunshots around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday and found a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound, and the officers rendered aid but the man died at the scene. Police also found a 22-year-old woman at the scene who was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and later released.
NBC News reported that Spinks was charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and felony possession of a firearm on an educational campus, and police said Spinks was being held without bond. Swaim said the investigation led to Spinks and that the shooting stemmed from an argument between two groups of people.
Second Shooting, More Injuries
Winston-Salem Police said a second shooting happened less than an hour later on campus, with officers responding when they heard shots around 10:22 p.m.
Assistant Police Chief Jason Swaim said officers responded to Victory Circle and Cromartie Street and found two gunshot victims, Najir Pearsall, a 21-year-old male, and Makyiah Ward, a 20-year-old female.
Swaim said a vehicle related to that incident was later stopped by Winston-Salem Police, and no arrests had been made in the second shooting incident as of Sunday afternoon.
CNN reported that authorities were investigating to determine if there was any connection between the two shootings, while the Winston-Salem Police Department said the first shooting was an isolated incident.
University officials canceled the remainder of homecoming activities Sunday, and Chancellor Bonita J. Brown called the shootings “senseless violence.”
Charges, Campus Security
Winston-Salem Police said Spinks was being held without bond on charges of murder and possession of a firearm on educational property, and NBC News said court records show he has two previous court cases pending in North Carolina.
“‘Right now, the community is in need of your prayers.”
NBC News reported that Spinks had a pending case in Randolph County involving charges of carrying a concealed weapon and marijuana possession from an arrest in March, and NBC News said he was indicted in October on charges of felony conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery with a dangerous weapon in Guilford County.
Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. told the community, “Right now, the community is in need of your prayers. The community is in need of us coming together,” during the news conference.
Winston-Salem State University Chancellor Bonita J. Brown assured students, faculty and parents that the campus was secure and that additional law enforcement would remain while the investigation continues.
The university offered counseling for anyone in need, and Brown said, “We take our responsibility for campus safety seriously and remain committed to the well-being of everyone who is part of our university community.”
