The Independent reported the royal family’s appearance in Glasgow included watching a netball semi-final match at the city’s Hydro arena, with the visit occurring on the penultimate day of the Games ahead of the closing ceremony scheduled for Sunday.

The Independent also said the family later met gold medal-winning para powerlifter Mark Swan and gymnast Reuben Ward on the concourse outside the venue, with the Commonwealth Games mascot Finnie engaging with the royals.

In Scotland, William and Kate are known by their Scottish titles, the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, as ABC News noted while describing the family’s day at the Games.

High-fives and meet-and-greets

ABC News reported that George, Charlotte and Louis joined their parents for meet-and-greets and exchanged high-fives with people at the Games, including the Commonwealth Games mascot.

The Independent described Finnie high-fiving George, Charlotte, and Louis and sharing a fist-bump with the Princess of Wales as the family moved through the venue after the netball event.

Reuben Ward, who won a gold medal while competing for Scotland, told Press Association: “Coming into the Games, I was just hoping for the best and hopefully I could get some medals.”

Mark Swan, reflecting on the Games after picking up a gold medal in the men’s para powerlifting competition, said: “Absolutely fantastic opportunity. “Just everything, from gold medals to then meeting royalty – blown away.”

After the netball event, The Independent said the family exited the arena, passing through lines of dedicated Games volunteers before heading to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in the east end of the city.

SportsAid links and next steps

The Independent said William and Kate would spend time with athletes competing at the Games whose careers have been empowered by the charity SportsAid, which Kate has supported as patron since 2013.

The Independent listed sporting stars whose early promise was boosted by SportsAid, including Sir Chris Hoy, Ellie Simmonds, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and Tom Daley, as the family’s schedule extended beyond netball.

People reported the outing marked the first official time Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have been seen publicly in Scotland, and said the family visited SportsAid during their time in Glasgow.

People also quoted an Aug. 1 Instagram message from William and Kate that read: “Incredible atmosphere at the Commonwealth Games today,” and added: “Watching world-class talent compete and seeing the power of sport to bring people together is truly special.”

As the Games continued, People said King Charles and Queen Camilla opened the Commonwealth Games on July 23, with the monarch praising Commonwealth communities for preparing for the Games with “generosity and pride” via the 500-day Baton Relay.
