The Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi wrote on his official X page that "the operation (Fajr al-Yemen) has begun to restore state institutions, liberate the capital Sana’a, and end the Yemeni militia Houthi terrorist coup."

Bab al-Mandeb and Taiz

Yemeni government forces fought Houthis on and near the Bab el Mandeb Strait, and Sky News correspondents showed armed Yemeni government forces nearby while Houthis fighters were also nearby the area. Tafiq Al-Haboun, Commander of Larj National Security Forces, said, "They have superior weapons like drones, Kornets and long-range ballistic missiles," adding that the weapons were only just now being used.

Al Jazeera said the internationally recognised government announced a major military campaign to retake all territory controlled by the Houthis, after weeks of heavy fighting and major Houthi advances along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and around Taiz. Al Jazeera reported that the Yemeni government army said on Monday 1,747 Houthi fighters had been "neutralised" in 1,122 military operations in the Saada, al-Jawf and Taiz governorates and along Yemen’s western coast.

Humanitarian and strategic stakes

The World Food Programme warned that Yemen imports about 90% of its food, and the instability on the western coast and the Bab al-Mandeb corridor could raise prices even further. The WFP estimated that the conflict prevents its teams and partners from reaching about 350,000 people in parts of Taiz and Hodeidah.

Al-Alimi said the campaign was not directed against residents of Sanaa, Saada, Hodeidah or other provinces under the group's control, and he urged residents to stay away from military positions, troop concentrations and supply routes. Al-Alimi also renewed an offer of amnesty and safe return for Houthi fighters who lay down their weapons and stop fighting, as the fighting intensified around Taiz and the Houthis besieged the city for more than a decade.
