Four people, including three children, have been killed by drone strikes in two locations in eastern Khartoum, after the Sudanese capital came under attack by RSF forces, Radio Dabanga reported. The Sudanese Armed Forces also bombed Nyala on Monday, causing an unspecified number of deaths and injuries, according to the Sudan Founding Alliance.

Blame, evidence, and condemnation

Emergency Lawyers condemned the Khartoum drone attack as a humanitarian tragedy and a “serious violation” that requires investigation and accountability, and the Associated Press reported there was no immediate comment from the RSF. Sayed Mustafa, a resident of Imtidad Nasser, told the Associated Press that he saw a drone flying toward the airport and heard anti-aircraft fire engage it, and he said, “Shortly after, the drone went down, and we heard an explosion near the airport,”. The Sudan Founding Alliance condemned the Ed Daein attack and attributed it to a drone operated by the Sudanese Armed Forces, saying it endangered civilian lives and deepened suffering amid Sudan’s worsening humanitarian crisis.

RSF-declared administration, known as Tasis, accused the army of carrying out the strike near the market in West Kordofan. The United Nations condemned the deadly attacks and Stephane Dujarric said, “We are alarmed by the continued deadly drone strikes across the country that are killing civilians, including children”.

Human cost and what’s next

The deadliest recent attack was near a market on Sunday evening in al-Dabba town in West Kordofan, where residents and medical workers said a drone attacked a transport hub and killed 80 people, with 47 wounded taken to al-Mujlad where 30 later died. Ahmed Abakar Wadi told AFP he helped bury “50 bodies who I helped bury, one of them my own brother Mohamed,” after the strike in Al-Dibab left 50 bodies, and the drone struck twice, 10 minutes apart. Sudan’s war began in April 2023, when military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF top commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, fell out over plans to fold the paramilitary into the army, and the conflict has killed at least 59,000 people according to ACLED.

The UN said about 13 million people have been forced from their homes, creating what aid groups call the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, and it said 33.7 million people, including 17.3 million children, urgently need food support this year. The United States urged the UN Security Council to push for a humanitarian truce and expand an arms embargo on Sudan, but China and Russia opposed widening the embargo, according to Al Jazeera and AP News.
