Strikes and a call to settle
Russian attacks killed four people across Ukraine while Ukraine continued to target Russian oil refineries and industrial sites with long-range drones, as the aerial war between Moscow and Kyiv intensified.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he hoped Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would “settle” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after Trump commented on his meeting with Zelenskyy at the U.N. General Assembly.
Zelenskyy wrote on Saturday that “Russia is escalating every single day,” and he listed “numerous strikes on residential homes” in the cities of Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia and in the Odesa, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions.
Zaporizhzhia’s regional military administration said two women died when they were trapped beneath the rubble of their home, and local officials said a separate Russian attack on the city of Sumy killed two people.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday that an attack on Kyiv damaged a data center supporting mobile internet services and Starlink satellite communications, while Ukraine’s long-range drones also hit Russian targets including the Ilsky oil refinery in Krasnodar as Zelenskyy later said.
Talks proposals and blame
Zelenskyy said on Friday that Washington had proposed a meeting of Russian, Ukrainian and US officials in the United Arab Emirates, and he said, “We are awaiting a proposal from the United States regarding the date, and the United States has suggested the Emirates as a possible location.” Putin said on Friday that every settlement proposal remained on the table, while Moscow was still weighing what served its interests, and he said Moscow was prepared to return to talks with Kyiv following last week’s parliamentary elections. Zelenskyy accused Russia in his nightly video address on Saturday of “not preparing to end the war – at least not at this point,” and he said Putin was “looking for pretexts to wage war.”
Sergei Lavrov told the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday that “Europe is doing everything it can to thwart peace talks in which the [Donald] Trump administration is interested,” and he said Moscow would achieve its military aims “no matter the circumstances.” The conflict’s diplomatic track remained unresolved as Zelenskyy appealed to the United Nations for countries to deprive Russia of revenue through sanctions and trade restrictions, while the AP said there had been “no breakthrough toward ending the conflict.”
Economic toll and drone pressure
ArcelorMittal closed Ukraine’s largest steel plant after four strikes in five weeks caused extensive damage and killed five workers at the plant in Kryvyi Rih, and the company said “safe and sustainable” operations were not possible.
Zelenskyy said on X that “There were also drone strikes today on a warehouse used by McDonald’s,” and he added that attacks on “American and other businesses, datacentres, internet providers” undermined “people’s ability to stay connected, study, and work.”
Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed a strike on Russia’s Ilsky oil refinery overnight on Sept. 26 in Krasnodar Krai, and Ukraine’s Fire Point said the refinery halted operations following an FP-1 drone attack.
Krasnodar Krai Governor Veniamin Kondratiev confirmed that drones attacked the Seversky district, where the refinery is located, and he claimed there were fatalities and one person seriously injured.
The Ukrainian Air Force briefing said Russia launched during the night of September 25 to 26 some 173 unmanned aerial vehicles against Ukraine, and Ukraine said it shot down or neutralized 134, about 77.5% of the total, as impacts were recorded at 19 locations and drone debris fell in eight others.
