Dnipro station hit
Russian forces struck the main train station in Dnipro with a jet-powered drone, killing 14 people and injuring 14 more as people waited to board a train, according to officials cited by CBS News. Oleksandr Hanzha said on Telegram that at least 14 others were injured and six were in critical condition, including an 11-year-old boy, after the attack on the platform where a train was preparing to leave for Zaporizhzhia. Ukrzaliznytsia said on Thursday that the drone hit the platform where a train was preparing to leave for the nearby city of Zaporizhzhia, and the BBC described the strike as a Russian attack on the Dnipro train station.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the attack as “horrific,” and he asked on X, “Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating?” Ukrzaliznytsia and other reporting also placed the attack in a wider pattern of Russian strikes on transport infrastructure, with Al Jazeera’s Audrey MacAlpine saying the attacks targeted “railway stations and sometimes even those railways themselves.”
Ceasefire and sanctions
Zelenskyy linked the Dnipro strike to sanctions politics, and he said on X, “Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating?” CNN quoted Zelensky as saying, “These are deliberate strikes against civilians, brazen in their cruelty, and the Russians are carrying them out right as the humanitarian operation in Oleshky is unfolding,” as Ukraine and Russia observed a ceasefire in the southern region of Kherson. CBS News said the localized held in Oleshky stretched into a third day, and it said humanitarian aid was poised to roll into Oleshky as military units cleared away landmines.
Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets told CBS News that “The parties are fully adhering to the agreements, and no violations of the ceasefire have been reported,” while Russia’s Interfax news agency reported the Kremlin hoped aid would reach Oleshky on Thursday or Friday. CNN reported that the ceasefire would remain in place until 10:59 p.m. local time on November 1, even as Russia and Ukraine continued to trade accusations about targeting civilians.
Wider war toll
The Dnipro strike came alongside other reported Russian attacks, with Al Jazeera saying two teenagers were killed in Chernihiv and three people were killed in a separate strike on an apartment building in Kremenchuk.
CNN reported that Thursday’s victims included two 15-year-old girls killed in Chernihiv and that another three people were killed by a Russian drone strike on a residential building in the Poltava region.
Al Jazeera said Russia downed most of the 613 drones launched towards Moscow overnight, and it added that Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defence forces destroyed 231 of the unmanned aerial vehicles on approach to the city.
The same Al Jazeera report said the Russian Defence Ministry claimed it intercepted and destroyed 1,214 Ukrainian drones overnight across regions, and it described minor damage in Sterlitamak after debris from downed drones fell onto an unnamed industrial facility.
In response to the Dnipro attack, Zelenskyy urged the United States and Europe to act, and France 24 quoted him as writing, “The Russians attacked the platform where a suburban train and another for passengers were stopped. Unfortunately, the number of victims at the moment is 13,” before authorities later announced a toll of 14.
