Shanice Brookes, 30, Shot Dead Outside One Four One Bar In Sheffield

South Yorkshire Police named Shanice Brookes, 30, as the “innocent bystander” fatally shot outside the One Four One bar in West Street, Sheffield city centre, shortly before 2.45am on Monday.

The BBC said Brookes was “senselessly shot during an incident to which she was simply an innocent bystander,” and that she was treated at the scene by police and paramedics before being taken to hospital where she died.

South Yorkshire Police said a 30-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder near Stockport, and that officers were given further time to question them into Thursday.

The Irish News reported officers were called to West Street, a busy area of Sheffield known for its bars and restaurants, where Brookes was found with serious injuries and later died in hospital.

Brookes’ family described her as “one of a kind” and said she had “the biggest heart and the kind of energy you could never forget,” in a tribute released after South Yorkshire Police named her.

The Guardian quoted her family saying: “Shanice had the biggest heart and the kind of energy you could never forget,” and said she was “senselessly shot” while simply enjoying a night out.

South Yorkshire Police Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles said: “People often say innocent victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Shanice was not in the wrong place at the wrong time,” and urged: “Please do not stay silent.”

The Irish News also quoted Knowles saying: “If you saw what happened on Monday morning, or have information about who was involved, please do not stay silent,” as detectives appealed for anyone on West Street or Eldon Street to come forward.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that three people were arrested on suspicion of murder following the shooting, with one 30-year-old man arrested in Sheffield and a 30-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman arrested near Stockport in Greater Manchester.

The BBC reported that the 30-year-old man arrested in Sheffield has now been released and is no longer being treated as a suspect, while the other two remain in custody after officers were given further time to question them.

Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane said the investigation was in its early stages and that officers would continue to have a “significant presence at the scene in the area today and in the coming days.”

McFarlane said: “Gun crime causes unbearable tragedy and the victim and her family deserve answers,” and urged people who saw what happened or know who is responsible to share what they know directly to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
