SHIB rallies without catalyst

Shiba Inu (SHIB) surged about 36% on Sunday to about $0.0000057, adding roughly $1 billion to its market value in a day without any announcement or development to account for it. CoinDesk said SHIB’s market cap is now near $3.4 billion on almost $380 million of daily volume, its highest turnover ranking in months, while noting that nothing has emerged from Shibarium, the network's layer-2. The same CoinDesk report said the wider dog-token complex lagged, with Dogecoin gaining 6% over the same stretch and smaller-cap tokens moving as much as 10%.

South Korean buying stood out in the reporting, with Upbit’s SHIB/KRW pair described as the single largest market at about $62 million, over a tenth of global volume, and trading at a slight premium to Binance and other dollar venues. CoinDesk also tied the timing to trading rhythm, describing a first push late Saturday, nine flat hours, then a second move through the Asian morning.

Korean flows and liquidations

CoinDesk reported that short sellers paid for the jump, saying about $6 million in SHIB and 1000SHIB positions were liquidated across roughly 2,300 traders, with some $5 million of that total from shorts. The CoinDesk account said those liquidations followed the price up rather than causing it, adding that at that size they cannot explain a move this large. finance.biggo similarly described the rally as concentrated in Shiba Inu rather than a broad-based rotation, noting that the move came without any project announcement, network upgrade, or other clear fundamental catalyst.

finance.biggo also highlighted that the most prominent feature of the rally was heavy concentration of trading volume on South Korean exchanges, with the SHIB/KRW pair on Upbit generating about $62 million in volume and accounting for more than a tenth of global turnover. In the same framing, finance.biggo said the timing aligned with active Asian trading hours, with SHIB recording an initial advance late Saturday, trading largely sideways for about nine hours, then accelerating again during the Asian morning.

What traders watch next

CoinDesk said holding the latest gains may depend on whether elevated volume continues after the initial excitement fades, warning that a rapid decline in Korean trading activity or the disappearance of the Upbit premium could remove an important source of demand. The same CoinDesk report said traders should watch derivatives funding rates, open interest, and liquidation data, because a sharp increase in leveraged long positions after the rally could make SHIB vulnerable to a reversal if buyers stop supporting the price. finance.biggo added that the liquidation total was too small to explain a rally that added about $1 billion to SHIB’s market value, and said prices were already rising before the largest liquidations occurred.

finance.biggo concluded that the move left traders searching for a reason that simply does not exist in any on-chain or off-chain announcement, quoting a CoinDesk market report that said, "This SHIB move had none of that." Both accounts placed the rally in context of SHIB’s history, with CoinDesk saying SHIB launched in August 2020 as an Ethereum token created by an anonymous developer known as Ryoshi and pitched as a "Dogecoin killer" with no product behind it.
