Hospital generators fail

Shuhada Al-Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza warned in a statement Sunday that the disruption of electrical generators had entered an “extremely dangerous phase” after a fourth generator was rendered inoperable.

The hospital said the operating generators have become decrepit after three years of continuous operation amid the ongoing extraordinary conditions engulfing the Gaza enclave, and that the generators are no longer able to meet the daily needs of critical sections.

It warned that the worsening crisis has forced the shutdown of operating rooms, while the dialysis unit, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), intensive care unit (ICU), and clinical laboratories face the risk of ceasing operations at any moment.

The hospital said the backup generator malfunction crisis has resulted in the suspension of more than 50% of the hospital's healthcare services, directly affecting the ability of medical staff to provide care for patients and the injured and maintain essential services.

It appealed to international and humanitarian institutions to urgently supply sustainable power lines and install new generators to salvage the situation at the medical facility.

Deir al-Balah shutdown risk

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah warned that it could be forced to cease operations entirely after several electricity generators broke down and Israeli authorities prevented the entry of technical supplies and specialised fuel needed to maintain them.

Hospital director Raed Hussein said the facility had entered a “very dangerous” stage after backup generators stopped functioning, paralyzing operations in several vital departments and threatening others with complete shutdown.

He told a press conference on Sunday that the operating theatres had completely stopped functioning after a fourth generator went out of service, and that dialysis units, neonatal incubators, intensive care units and laboratories were at risk of shutting down within hours amid the worsening electricity crisis and rising temperatures.

The New Arab also cited medical sources in Gaza as saying the territory's healthcare system was facing “catastrophic conditions” due to the continuing Israeli blockade and restrictions on the entry of medicines and medical supplies.

It added that Israel has continued to besiege Gaza after a ceasefire deal was reached in October 2025, violating provisions that stipulate a minimum level of aid supplies must be provided, and that it has killed 929 people in deadly attacks in Gaza despite the ceasefire agreement.

UNICEF warns newborns

UNICEF warned that as fuel supplies remain very low in the Gaza Strip, the oxygen generators at Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah are at risk of failing, endangering the lives of about twenty newborns.

The UN News report said Al-Aqsa Hospital has been forced to abandon much of its equipment because of power cuts, treating patients manually on the floors of the overcrowded facility.

It added that Gaza needs more fuel now and safe corridors for humanitarian workers, and that the World Health Organization said on Thursday that several hospitals were short of fuel and medicines due to the Rafah crossing closure.

The report also said WFP noted that thousands of families in Gaza are again seeking food and shelter, while OCHA warned that if aid does not begin to enter Gaza in massive quantities, despair and hunger will spread even more.

In the same UN News update, WFP said it has provided food to 1 million people since the start of the month, but with reduced rations, and that it worked with more than 70 community kitchens across Gaza to provide about 4.4 million hot meals in Gaza.
