He said the experience had left him “reeling, devastated” and “in a bit of shock”. The pastor also spoke about the difficult questions the tragedy had raised for him about suffering, faith and why God allows painful events to happen. “I’m sure you woke up this morning with so many questions, particularly the ‘why’ questions: Why did this happen? Why did this happen at a human level? What went wrong? “But perhaps the deeper question is: Why did God allow this to happen? I’m sure that’s a question you’re wrestling with too, along with many others. People were coming together to worship Him, so why would God allow something like this – a tragic accident – to interrupt a worship event?” He continued: “As Christians, we still have questions, and we live with mysteries, and find a deeper place of trust for things that we really don’t understand, and this is one of them.” Acknowledging that there were “no easy answers”, Pastor Andy pointed to Luke 13, saying the passage was a reminder that “life is a fragile gift” and that Christians should place their trust in God. The fundraiser says: “What was meant to be a time of worship, fellowship, and celebration became an unimaginable tragedy.” It describes Pastor Robert as someone whose life reflected ‘humility, faith, love, compassion, and service’, adding that through his ministry, kindness, prayers and encouragement, he touched many lives. His family is now facing the loss of a husband, father, son and brother, alongside the financial challenges of his unexpected death, the appeal says. It asks supporters to donate or share the fundraiser, while also asking people to keep Pastor Robert’s family in their prayers. The appeal was launched on behalf of Jesus the Living Water World Wide Church – UK by June Ramores, with Bishop Norman Ponce signing the tribute. It concludes by paying tribute to Pastor Robert legacy of faith and service, saying the lives he touched ‘will never be forgotten’. After the incident, South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed a further five people were assessed and treated at the scene. Four of those patients were taken to local hospitals for further treatment, including two patients with more serious injuries and two patients with less serious injuries. Police have remained at the scene, over the weekend, as officers continue enquiries to support the coronial process – and gather evidence for a joint investigation with Horsham District Council. Witnesses have been urged to come forward. The man who died at a Christian music festival on Friday has been named. Robert Guanco, 41, was killed when a large sign fell at Big Church Festival, near Steyning, on Friday afternoon (August 28). Mr Guanco was a pastor at Jesus the Living Water Church in Eastbourne, which announced his death in a statement shared with its congregation. The church described him as a “faithful servant of God”, a loving husband and a devoted father. Its statement said: “It is with a deeply heavy heart that we share the sad news that our beloved Pastor Robert passed away yesterday, August 28, 2026. “We are mourning, grieving, praying, and trusting in the Lord during this incredibly difficult time. “Pastor Robert was a faithful servant of God, a loving husband to Isay, a devoted and caring father to Ellie, and a blessing to so many people whose lives he touched. “His life, his faith, his love, and his service to God will never be forgotten.” The church at Sovereign Harbour Community Centre said members were taking comfort in their faith and believing that Mr Guanco was now “home with the Lord, free from suffering and resting in eternal glory”.
