Romania downs Spanish F-18
Romania’s defence ministry said on Sunday that a Spanish fighter jet shot down a drone that breached its airspace near the border with Ukraine and Moldova, with debris falling in an unpopulated area of the Galati region.

CNN reported the Spanish F-18 was on a NATO air policing mission and that the ministry said the jet “made radar contact with the target and received permission to engage it,” adding that the drone was shot down safely at 05:01 am.
TRT World said the drone entered from Moldova and was intercepted by an F-18 deployed on NATO duties, and it described the incident as highlighting challenges for NATO states bordering Ukraine.
The Deccan Chronicle said the interception occurred at 5:01 am local time (0201 GMT), and it placed the breach near the border with Ukraine and Moldova.
CNN also said Romania shares a 614-km land border with Ukraine and that Russian drones have repeatedly breached its airspace over the last four years.
Drone incidents and casualties
Beyond Romania’s airspace, PBS said Russian jet-powered drones struck a home in northern Ukraine on Friday, killing a 29-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son, and it said the strike came as the UN reported July was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since the weeks following Moscow’s all-out invasion.
PBS quoted Danielle Bell, head of the U.N. human rights monitoring mission in Kyiv, saying, “The number of civilian casualties in July was the highest we documented in a single month since March 2022.”
In parallel, Al Jazeera reported that Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least one person and wounded seven more while the Spanish jet shot down a drone over Romania, and it said a woman was killed and six others wounded in a missile and drone attack on Kryvyi Rih.
Al Jazeera also said Ukrainian authorities reported Kyiv was “under ballistic missile attack” late on Saturday, with one person wounded and fires sparked at non-residential sites in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts.
The same Al Jazeera report said Romania’s Defence Ministry reported the Spanish F-18 shot down a drone illegally breaching its national airspace and that it was the fourth drone shot down in Romania this year.
Escalation, NATO risk
TRT World framed the Romanian shootdown as part of a broader pattern of spillover from Russia’s war, saying Romania’s eastern seaboard bordering the Black Sea is in the immediate vicinity of areas frequently targeted by strikes.

It added that authorities have reported finding drone fragments on Romanian soil several times since 2023 following Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports along the Danube River, which lie just across the border.
In Ukraine, PBS said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that Moscow is planning to escalate its strikes on Ukraine and quoted him saying, “We will use much harsher methods to destroy everything that feeds Kyiv's war machine from the West.”
PBS also reported that Russia’s glide bombs and other attacks have produced civilian harm at scale, stating that at least 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 wounded last month, and it said that was 70% higher than in July last year and 30% up on June of this year.
Al Jazeera, meanwhile, reported that in Russia on Sunday authorities said they had downed more than 100 drones heading towards the capital overnight, and it said emergency services were deployed to sites where debris fell, with Mayor Sergei Sobyanin saying three people were wounded.
