Authorities in Kyiv also said the capital was “under ballistic missile attack” late on Saturday, with one person wounded and fires sparked at non-residential sites in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts, Al Jazeera reported.

In Russia, Moscow authorities said they downed more than 100 drones heading towards the capital overnight, and Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said emergency services were deployed to sites where debris fell and three people were wounded, Al Jazeera reported.

DW reported that three people died in Russian bombings against Ukraine and that three others died in a massive drone attack against Moscow, with the Russian drone attack involving 600 drones launched against the city and 201 destroyed, and it also said two deaths occurred in Zaporiyia and one in Krivói Rog.

Officials, drones, and claims

In Kyiv, Vitaly Klitschko reported “explosions in the capital” and said the city was “under un ataque con misiles balísticos,” while the Kyiv city military administration warned residents to seek shelter, according to DW.

Klitschko later reported a fire in a non-residential building in the Oblonski district after the fall of debris, and DW said the city’s military administration reported one person injured.

Al Jazeera described the NATO-related incident in Romania, saying Romania’s Defence Ministry reported that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet pilot on a NATO air policing mission to Romania shot down a drone that illegally breached its national airspace.

DW also said Russia faced drone attacks over its own territory, with Moscow Mayor Serguéi Sobianin indicating on the state MAX platform that 600 drones were launched and 201 were destroyed, and it added that three people died in the Russian region of Róstov.

In Ukraine’s industrial heartland, DW said Russian strikes killed two people in Zaporiyia and one in the industrial city of Krivói Rog, while Al Jazeera tied the Kryvyi Rig casualties to a missile and drone attack that killed a woman and wounded six others.

Escalation and regional risk

Al Jazeera said Russia has maintained near-daily missile and drone strikes across Ukraine since launching its full-scale invasion in early 2022, with areas far from the front lines frequently coming under attack.

The same report said the war’s impact has spread to key regional shipping lanes, with reports of mines and unmanned sea drones found floating in the Black Sea, and it cited United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission figures that civilian casualties in Ukraine hit their highest level since 2022 this July, with at least 437 killed and 2,610 injured.

Al Jazeera also described a reciprocal pattern, saying Ukraine has increasingly targeted military, industrial and logistical facilities deep inside Russia, arguing its strikes are a response to Moscow’s ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian towns and infrastructure.

France 24 said Ukraine announced on Saturday that it targeted with long-range missiles a Russian military airbase and a missile center that supports a nascent Russian satellite internet network, and it quoted Zelenskiy saying, “It is important to reduce Russia’s wartime capabilities.”

France 24 further reported that the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said direct hits were made at the airbase in the Nizhny Novgorod region and at the Progress missile and space center near Samara, and it said the strikes caused fires at both sites.
