Drones over Moscow
Ukraine launched a mass drone attack targeting Moscow as Russia bombarded Kyiv with ballistic missiles, with a local official saying at least one person was killed and three were wounded in the Ukrainian drone barrage.
““201 drones were destroyed in Moscow region””
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said it destroyed 822 drones across the country overnight, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote that the city was targeted with 600 drones and “201 drones were destroyed in Moscow region”.
In Kyiv, officials said the capital was “under ballistic missile attack” late on Saturday, with at least one person wounded and fires sparked at nonresidential sites in the Obolonskyi and Holosiivskyi districts.
The attack wave also followed Ukrainian authorities’ account that at least one person was killed and seven were wounded in Russian air attacks late on Saturday, including a woman killed and six people wounded in a missile and drone attack on Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Al Jazeera’s Pavel Felgenhauer said the targeting of capital cities suggests an escalation, noting Ukraine had managed to bypass air defences in the Moscow region, which he said has the “best and most dense antiair defences in the entirety of Russia”.
Kyiv market and NATO
In Kyiv, the BBC reported that six people were injured at a market in the Ukrainian capital as the country was hit by a series of Russian strikes, and it described Dan Johnson visiting the smouldering market known for selling books and posters.
The BBC said firefighters worked to extinguish hot spots at the market, while Russian officials said seven people were killed across Ukraine in strikes by Ukraine.
France 24 said Kyiv was hit by Russian strikes on Sunday, killing at least four people and injuring six, while a popular outdoor book market was destroyed.
NBC News reported that an F-18 fighter on a NATO air policing mission shot down a drone that illegally breached Romanian national airspace, with Romania’s defense ministry saying the drone was shot down safely at 5:01 a.m.
NATO’s military headquarters spokesperson Martin O’Donnell said, “Additional details regarding Sunday’s incident remain under investigation, but the drone appears to be Russian,” as Romania’s ministry said the target came from neighboring Moldova.
Industrial hits and air defenses
Russian strikes hit Ukraine’s Kryvyi Rih, where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown saw a missile attack on the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih mining and metallurgical plant kill two people and injure 13 workers and contractors, according to ArcelorMittal’s press service.
“Russian forces launched over 1,550 attack drones”
In Kyiv, the overnight strikes caused a large-scale fire at the Petrivka book market near the Pochaina metro station in the Obolonskyi district, with the State Emergency Service reporting that the fire engulfed the territory, completely burning down several rows of retail pavilions and destroying inventory.
Zelenskyy said on Telegram that Russian forces launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 aerial bombs, and 62 missiles—primarily ballistic—at Ukraine over the previous week, and he reiterated calls for international partners to supply Ukraine with air defense systems.
Zelenskyy warned, “When North Korean ballistic missiles destroy infrastructure and take lives here in Europe, European interceptors cannot simply remain in warehouses,” and he added, “Protecting lives is necessary. Russia must be stopped.”
The stakes extended to Russia’s own territory, where Andrei Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed when a drone hit a private home in the Moscow region, and where Russia’s Defense Ministry said it destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones throughout the country.
