Speeding Oakland Driver Kills 3, Injures 3 After Crashing Into Pedestrians

A driver struck and killed three people and injured three others in East Oakland late Saturday night after turning from 85th Avenue onto International Avenue, Oakland police said.

CBS News reported the driver was believed to have been speeding and was traveling northbound on 85th Avenue around 11:15 p.m. before hitting a parked vehicle and then multiple people along International Boulevard.

ABC7 San Francisco said the crash happened around 11 p.m. near International Boulevard and 85th Avenue near the East Bay Market Liquor store, and Oakland fire officials confirmed on social media that at least three people were found dead at that location.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said, "Oakland is mourning the lives lost in last night's tragic crash at International Boulevard and 85th Avenue in East Oakland," and added, "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, loved ones, and all of those impacted," in a statement carried by CBS News and ABC7 San Francisco.

A witness described the moment the driver hit people, telling ABC7 San Francisco, "He hit this blue car right here, and I guess he hit the gas and went even faster and went down the whole sidewalk, and just sideswiped all those people. And he took off running...I saw him hit this car, I seen him coming but there was nothing I could do he was going too fast," as Oakland Fire Department dispatch audio was cited in the report.

ABC7 San Francisco said the driver, a juvenile, was arrested in connection with the incident, and it was unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The Los Angeles Times reported that police officials said the driver is a juvenile in an email to the paper, and said police told The Times the suspect tried to flee the scene but was stopped and detained by civilians.

The Oaklandside reported that OPD hasn’t issued any statement about the crash yet and said the department’s decision to encrypt its radio traffic prevented it from learning more about how emergency personnel responded.

Authorities said three people were pronounced dead at the scene and three others were taken to local hospitals, with two in critical condition and one in serious condition, after the crash just before 11:15 p.m. near 85th Avenue and International Boulevard.

KTVU said the OPD identified the driver only as a juvenile and reported that the driver got out of the SUV and tried to run away but was caught by good Samaritans before Oakland police officers arrived.

The Oaklandside said three more were transported to hospitals, two in critical condition and one with serious injuries, and it reported that the suspected driver had minor injuries along with two other people.
