Pipelines hit in Syria

The Syrian Petroleum Company announced damage to the oil product transmission line between Baniyas and Homs after a hole was found in the Al-Hadayta area in the western countryside of Homs, causing an oil spill on October 15, 2026. The Syrian Petroleum Company also said the Jazba gas line in the countryside of Al-Hasakah exploded and caught fire on the same day, according to official media citing the company. The incidents followed a series of damages to energy facilities in the preceding weeks, and the Syrian Petroleum Company described the Jazba gas line event as an act of sabotage without naming the responsible party.

The explosion struck the Jbessa gas export pipeline in the al-Arabidi area of southern Hasakah province at approximately 5:15 p.m. on October 15, sparking a fire and prompting emergency crews to isolate the damaged section. The Syrian Petroleum Company attributed the Baniyas to Homs petroleum-products pipeline incident to sabotage intended to steal fuel and said authorities temporarily closed the Homs-Tartus highway.

Valves shut, roads closed

Uday Al-Satouf, the director of the press office of the Syrian Oil Company, told SANA that competent authorities isolated the area and shut control valves located on both sides of the affected point after the incident in northeastern Syria.

The company said the incident occurred after an act of sabotage recorded during the early hours of Thursday against the Banias-Homs oil pipeline near the village of Hadida, where a gasoline leak occurred in an attempt to steal fuel.

The administration of the Talkalakh region ordered the road that connects Homs with Tartous to be closed in both directions due to the spill of large amounts of gasoline in the vicinity of Hadida.

The Syrian Petroleum Company described the Al-Jabsa production gas pipeline as targeted in a "sabotage attack" in Hasakah province, causing a fire.

The company said, "Relevant authorities are monitoring the situation. The area has been cordoned off" and that isolation valves on either side of the targeted section had been closed.

Regional corridors and risks

The damage to the Baniyas-Homs and Jazba lines highlighted a sensitive issue for Syria and Iraq as Baghdad looked for new outlets to export its oil away from maritime bottlenecks. A project to build a network of pipelines linking Iraqi oil fields to the Syrian coast on the Mediterranean could require investments of no less than $15 billion and could take about four years to construct, with initial designs suggesting a targeted total throughput of around two million barrels per day. The synchronization of the pipeline incidents with rapid moves to develop alternative routes raises a question about what Syria needs so its geography does not become a vulnerability threatening its projects before they begin.

The repeated incidents threaten efforts to rebuild Syria’s electricity and fuel networks after years of conflict, and it noted that no connection between Thursday’s two pipeline incidents has been established. Oil spills on the Homs-Tartus International Highway this Thursday morning led to the closure of the road between the two governorates and a change in traffic routes after a hole in one of the oil pipelines caused the spill.
