Altitude looms at Azteca
England head coach Thomas Tuchel said England will not have enough time to adapt to the high altitude before they take on Mexico in their World Cup last-16 game at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium.
“England's players will not have enough time to adapt to the challenges of playing at high altitude before they take on Mexico in their World Cup last-16 game, says head coach Thomas Tuchel”
Tuchel pointed to the match being played at 2,240 meters above sea level and said, "The altitude will be a big disadvantage because we cannot physically adapt to it," adding that England have "only three days in between these matches."

The BBC said Harry Kane’s double against DR Congo booked England’s trip to Azteca Stadium, which is around 7,200ft above sea level, on Monday, 6 July at 01:00 BST.
The El Comercio report said the England national team, led by Tuchel, will face Mexico in the round of 16 at Estadio Azteca, and that Tuchel described the altitude as a determining factor because it is impossible to physically adapt to it in only four days.
Tuchel’s quotes and rivals
Tuchel told the BBC that "It just takes too much time" and said England have "only three days in between these matches," framing the altitude as something they must deal with rather than a pressure narrative.
In the same BBC piece, Tuchel also dismissed the idea that expectation weighed on performance, saying, "I did not see any of that," as England looked to end their long wait to add to their World Cup win of 60 years ago.

El Comercio reported that Tuchel said, "We should expect many obstacles," and that the altitude would be "a major disadvantage" because it is impossible to physically adapt to it in only four days.
The RTE.ie account added that Tuchel said "a lot, a lot" of obstacles await England, while Mexico have played all their games at the Azteca stadium located 2,240 metres above sea level and England have been based in Kansas City.
What’s at stake next
The stakes for England hinge on whether they can overcome Mexico’s altitude advantage and move into the quarterfinals, with the BBC noting the match is on Monday, 6 July at 01:00 BST after England booked their last-16 place.
“English journalist Henry Winter shared an anecdote that gained relevance on the road to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup”
talkSPORT said Tuchel warned it will be "impossible" for England to adapt in time, adding that England would arrive one day early but "we will not be ready" because "you cannot be ready in terms of adaptation."
Heavy said the winner of the Mexico vs England tie will face the winner of the Brazil vs Norway clash in the quarterfinals on July 11 in Miami, while also placing the England-Mexico round of 16 at Estadio Azteca on Sunday, July 5.
Konbini’s tournament guide placed the Azteca at an altitude of 2,240 meters and said it will host the opening match Mexico–South Africa on June 11, underscoring how central the venue’s elevation is to the World Cup schedule.
