Tottenham Agree £52m Deal To Sign Brighton Defender Jan Paul Van Hecke

Tottenham Hotspur agreed a deal to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton worth £52m, with the Netherlands defender set to join Marcos Senesi as Spurs look to revamp their defence.

Sky Sports reported the defender worked with Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton, playing 50 games under the Italian, and said the centre-back only wanted to join Tottenham.

RTE.ie said the agreement is worth £52million (€60.12m) and that after Tottenham had two bids rejected for the 25-year-old, who was set to be out of contract next summer, the move to north London was struck with a fixed £52m fee.

The BBC said the 26-year-old started in his country's 2-2 draw with Japan on Sunday at the World Cup, and that he has a year left on his current Brighton contract and showed no inclination to extend the deal.

Sky Sports quoted Michael Bridge saying, "This is total commitment in De Zerbi and you could also say a reward for keeping Spurs up," as it framed the signing as part of De Zerbi’s transfer plan.

Sky Sports also cited Sam Blitz’s analysis that "Roberto De Zerbi is looking for centre-backs who are better on the ball," and linked Van Hecke’s arrival to Spurs’ aim for ball progressors in the first phase of play.

RTE.ie said De Zerbi warned lessons must be learned after Tottenham’s 2025-26 campaign where only a final-day win over Everton secured Premier League survival, and it added that the Lewis family promised they were "all in" to fund the rebuild after back-to-back 17th-placed finishes.

The BBC reported that Brighton had already turned down one offer for a player who joined them from NAC Breda in 2020, but accepted Tottenham’s offer, which should clear the way for Van Hecke rejoining former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi in north London.

ESPN said the £52 million ($69.8m) fee is a fixed price with no add-ons and that personal terms are expected to be finalised in the coming days, while it also reported Spurs rejected a £35m bid from Brighton for Vuskovic.

The BBC added that Romero captained Spurs to a first trophy in 17 years when they beat Manchester United to win the Europa League in 2025, and it noted the 28-year-old’s availability—either through suspension or injury—has been a source of frustration among supporters.
