Trump Administration Partially Lifts Anthropic Mythos 5 Export Blackout for 100+ U.S. Organizations
Key Takeaways
- Commerce Department authorizes Mythos 5 redeployment to over 100 U.S. agencies and companies.
- Ends two-week government blackout restricting Mythos 5 access.
- Access for select U.S. organizations, including agencies and large firms.
Mythos 5 Partial Re-Release
The Trump administration partially lifted its export-control blackout on Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5, authorizing access for more than 100 U.S. organizations after a June 12 directive had barred foreign nationals from using Mythos 5 and Fable 5.
In a Friday letter to Anthropic’s chief compute officer Tom Brown, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote, "I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model."

Anthropic said it was restoring access quickly, adding, "We’re restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we’re continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again," while the government remained silent on Fable 5.
The restrictions had been imposed after the government ordered Anthropic to shut off access to both models worldwide, and the new authorization still limits deployment to a set of trusted partners rather than public availability.
NBC News reported the restored access would cover around 100 organizations including government agencies and private companies, with the company continuing discussions with the government over restoring access to Fable 5.
EU Pressure and Industry Pushback
The partial reversal came after the earlier ban sparked concerns among EU officials, with French minister delegate for Europe Benjamin Haddad arguing that Europe "cannot settle for being an open market dependent on technologies designed, funded, and controlled elsewhere."
Euronews reported that the government had told Anthropic it could restore access to one of its most powerful AI tools for select U.S. organizations, and Anthropic said it had been working closely with the government since 12 June.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also weighed in on the vetting question, writing on X that "I just don't like the idea of the government picking the customers," as DW noted the administration had not revealed how it would vet organizations.
DW said the announcement came two weeks after the Trump administration blocked access to Mythos 5, and it described a broader standoff in which the administration cited national security concerns about misuse by military intelligence users in China, Russia or other countries.
Politico reported that conversations between Anthropic and the administration were expected to continue through the weekend on restoring access to Fable, while also noting industry concerns about how heavy a hand President Donald Trump plans to take in overseeing what U.S. developers can release.
What’s at Stake Next
The government’s move keeps Fable 5 blocked while allowing Mythos 5 to be redeployed to organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure, leaving the next step—restoring Fable 5—dependent on further security reviews.
“Trump administration clears Anthropic’s Mythos 5 for use by over 100 US agencies and companies Share: Two weeks after the June 12 ban, the Trump administration cleared Anthropic to redeploy its cybersecurity AI Mythos 5 to more than 100 designated U”
NBC News said Anthropic would continue discussions with the government over the weekend to restore access to Fable 5, and it described the earlier export-control directive as forcing Anthropic to shut off access to both models worldwide.
WIRED reported that Lutnick’s letter permitted approved organizations to allow their foreign national employees to access Mythos 5 and that Anthropic may do the same for its own foreign national employees, while also noting the other requirements from the June 12 directive remained in effect.
Semafor said the letter was silent on Fable 5 and that people close to the talks were moving toward releasing Fable as well, though the timeline was unclear.
In the same period, the U.S. government’s approach has been tied to national security and cybersecurity concerns, and Semafor quoted Commerce Department spokesman Benno Kass saying, "In just two weeks, we have worked diligently to ensure America remains the global leader in AI while safeguarding our security."
