Strikes and retaliation

The United States launched strikes on Iran for a 10th night in a row, with DW saying the US military’s Central Command described the attacks as designed to degrade Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

DW reported that Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency said air defenses were activated near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant on the southern coast, a complex that had been hit by previous waves of US strikes.

In parallel, President Donald Trump vowed that Iran would “pay” for killing three U.S. soldiers, writing on social media that “Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over!”

NewsNation (Reuters) said the number of U.S. troops killed in the war on Iran rose to 17 over the weekend, with two personnel confirmed killed in Jordan and the remains of an additional service member being examined.

Mediators and open channels

TheDailyNewsOnline said mediators proposed a new truce even as Trump vowed that Iran “will pay” for killing three U.S. soldiers, with the post appearing as the Middle East war widened further.

Alhurra quoted a White House official saying the United States will continue its strikes against Iran despite ongoing talks, adding that Trump is focused on making Iran pay for violations of the memorandum of understanding and its ongoing terrorist acts in the Strait of Hormuz.

Alhurra also reported that the official said the talks remain ongoing, describing a dual-track approach that escalates military pressure while keeping diplomatic channels open.

In the same reporting, Alhurra said a senior Iranian official told Reuters that mediators presented Tehran with a proposal for a ceasefire for ten days, aimed at creating conditions to revive the temporary agreement that collapsed last month.

Costs, shipping, and escalation

CNBC reported that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained far below prewar averages, with Kpler tracking just 30 “verified transits” between Friday and Sunday.

CNBC said the strain on global oil supplies threatened to worsen when Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, while Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said messages are still being exchanged through intermediaries despite the escalating conflict.

BBC reported that Tehran declared a “full-scale war” with Washington and said Iran is engaged in a “full-scale war,” while Trump warned that the price would be paid “many times over” for every American service member killed.

BBC also said Iran announced it was expanding strikes to include the city of Bushehr, where a nuclear power plant is located, as navigation in the Strait of Hormuz remained disrupted and Houthi movement announced a ban on maritime traffic to Saudi Arabia.
