Uber expands ChatGPT Work

Uber announced it would implement ChatGPT Work across its entire workforce, totaling about 30,000 employees worldwide, after a pilot with 1,000 workers. Uber told TechCrunch that its entire global workforce, some 30,000 people, will now be using ChatGPT Work. The rollout would make ChatGPT Work available to more than 30,000 employees across Uber’s global workforce starting today.

Sumanth Sukumar, Uber’s vice president of engineering, said the company’s approach was to make powerful AI tools available across Uber while giving teams room to experiment. Uber said the pilot began in July and that the initial test included 1,000 employees across different areas such as finance, operations, and product development.

Pilot results and AI pods

Uber said about 80% of the initial users were non-engineers, and Sumanth Sukumar highlighted that the tool was used beyond engineering. Sukumar said early users used ChatGPT Work to analyze complex data from operations to identify trends and develop recommendations. Uber said employees used ChatGPT Work for a variety of tasks, including locating training materials for different markets and creating personalized interactive dashboards.

Uber said it formed AI working groups, known as ‘AI pods,’ that consisted of 30 AI engineers who collaborated with different teams for two weeks to automate key parts of their work. Sukumar said Uber would monitor how employees use the tool, the types of workflows they develop, and how it helps them work more efficiently.

Integration, evaluation, and models

ChatGPT Work connects with tools companies like Uber use on a daily basis, including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Slack. Uber would also have access to OpenAI’s portfolio of frontier models, including GPT‑6.1 Sol deployed as the default capability within ChatGPT Work. The rollout would be supported by Uber’s internal AI skills library, approved integrations and dedicated employee training, with teams across functions including operations, finance, marketing and product.

“‘We’ll look at how employees are using the technology, the kinds of workflows they develop and how it helps them work more effectively.”

Uber did not disclose how much it’s spending on the new rollout of the chatbot and Sukumar said the company will track how employees use the tool. Sukumar told TechCrunch that Uber would evaluate outcomes and use what it learns to guide how it deploys AI across the business.
