UN warns of breaking point
UN officials told the United Nations Security Council that the occupied West Bank has reached a critical "breaking point," with UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hannan Sulieman warning that "Humanitarian organizations cannot create the political conditions that children need to be safe."

Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov said that as of 10 August, 76 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank in 2026, including 18 minors.
Alakbarov also said that in 2026 alone, 3,800 Palestinians have been displaced due to settler violence, demolitions and evictions, and he described the pattern as Palestinians being forcibly displaced before settlers seize vacated land.
The UN session was held in New York on Tuesday, and WAFA reported it was the second in two weeks amid escalating violence in the West Bank affecting Palestinians at the request of European Council members, supported by Bahrain, China, Pakistan and the Russian Federation.
Children, detention, and displacement
Sulieman told the Security Council that the UN verified 174 Palestinian children killed in the occupied West Bank between January 2024 and July 2026, and she said "That is more than one child every week."
She added that at least 355 Palestinian children are being held in military detention, described as "the highest number in eight years," with nearly half detained without charge or trial.
Sulieman also presented four urgent requests, including prioritising the protection of children by ending administrative detention and ensuring safe access to schools and hospitals.
In parallel, Alakbarov warned that "Settler violence has reached unprecedented levels," citing more than 1,400 documented incidents this year affecting 260 communities.
Resolution 2803 and next steps
Alakbarov said the situation is an emergency requiring immediate action to prevent de facto annexation, and he warned that if it continues to unravel it will undermine implementation of resolution 2803 (2025).

WAFA reported that the UNSC session was held as part of preparations for legislative elections scheduled for Nov. 28, which Alakbarov welcomed amid the turmoil.
The UK told the UN in New York that "Children are among those most affected by conflict," and it said Israeli forces demolished three donor-funded classrooms at Sha’ab al Butum School on August 4.
