Ninth Night Strikes

The United States conducted a new round of airstrikes early Monday targeting Iran after announcing the death of another American service member, and Iran fired missiles toward Jordan that risked widening the conflict into neighboring Israel.

AP reported that the U.S. military said the service member was killed in Iraq on Saturday during the “controlled detonation” of a downed Iranian drone, and that since the war began, 17 U.S. service members have been killed.

BBC said U.S. Central Command announced the ninth straight night of military strikes against Iran, describing strikes on “military command centers, air defense sites, coastal surveillance facilities” and other capabilities.

The BBC account also said CENTCOM redirected six merchant ships and detained another vessel until July 19 to ensure compliance with the blockade it has imposed on Iran, while Iranian media reported explosions in areas including Tabriz and Sirik.

In the same reporting stream, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that Iran is using the Strait of Hormuz as leverage in the Middle East conflict, and urged other countries to step up to protect global shipping.

Injuries, Accountability

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said nearly 100 U.S. service members have sustained some degree of injury since July 7, and The Hill reported that 96 percent of them had returned to duty.

The Hill quoted Parnell saying in a statement, “The vast majority of injuries experienced were minor concussions,” and said further updates would be posted on the Defense Casualty Analysis System.

In a separate framing, ABC News reported that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused the Trump administration of misrepresenting the number of casualties and widening the war, saying, “The only people kept in the dark were the American people.”

ABC also quoted Rep. Thomas Massie telling ABC News, “Truth is first casualty of war, so we honestly have no idea what's going over there,” as he demanded more transparency from the Trump administration.

BBC added that the American embassy in Manama said it had information suggesting Iran may target unspecified sites in central Manama, and urged Americans in Bahrain to stay vigilant.

Regional Ripples

The conflict’s maritime and energy stakes were highlighted as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz “has largely stalled,” with AP saying the U.S. and Iran have targeted civilian infrastructure relied on by millions of people.

AP reported that a ship caught fire early Monday in the Strait of Hormuz near the coastline of Oman, and that it was unclear what sparked the blaze off Oman while the Guard later claimed it was targeting tankers in the strait.

BBC said the ongoing operations aim to prevent Iran from launching attacks on merchant ships and civilian sailors transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and it described CENTCOM’s efforts to weaken Iran’s military capabilities.

The Guardian reported that the 10 consecutive nights of U.S. airstrikes haven’t compelled Tehran to loosen its grip on the strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of all crude oil and natural gas traded once passed in peacetime.

In parallel, DW reported that Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said that if Iran fires missiles at Israel, Israel will strike them with full force, and if the United States changes its policy, Israel is prepared to defend and to attack as well.
