Shared framing

Several headlines build the US military's blockade-breach allegation into their account of the strike; Al Jazeera marks it with quotation marks, while others state it directly. RTVE, teleSUR and El Comentario instead lead on an attack on a commercial vessel, without the blockade claim in the headline.

US disables cargo ship

The United States Central Command said a U.S. fighter jet bombed a commercial cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman after the ship’s crew ignored repeated warnings and attempted to ‘breach its blockade’ of Iranian ports. CENTCOM said the strike targeted the stern of the M/V Ocean Molica, also identified as Arika Sun, and left its propulsion system completely disabled without injuries among the crew.

CENTCOM said the vessel had previously departed from an Iranian port and was trying to transit through regional waters. CENTCOM said it resumed enforcing the blockade on July 14 and urged ships in the Gulf of Oman and the approaches to the Strait of Hormuz to heed military warnings and navigational broadcasts while maintaining communication via Channel 16.

Numbers and claims

CENTCOM said that over the last three months U.S. forces disabled four merchant vessels and forced another 135 to change course. CENTCOM said U.S. forces destroyed ten tankers in that period and linked them to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps’ clandestine maritime network.

RTVE.es said CENTCOM described the same three-month period as “four merchant ships have been disabled and 135 vessels have been returned,” and it added that CENTCOM claimed “ten oil tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ clandestine billion-dollar network.” The United States Army stressed last Thursday that its forces and “regional partners” exercise clearly dominant control over the Strait of Hormuz, rejecting Tehran’s statements about its dominance over the route.

Wider maritime incidents

Al Jazeera’s report placed the Gulf of Oman strike inside a broader U.S.-Israel war on Iran framing, while it described the U.S. action as an attempt to run Iran blockade. اندبندنت عربية said the waterways around the Arabian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman saw an uptick in security and military incidents alongside the U.S. disabling of the Ocean Mollyka.

اندبندنت عربية said the British Maritime Trade Operations received a report of a tanker exiting the Strait of Hormuz sustaining an injury on the left side from an unknown projectile, causing a fire on board. اندبندنت عربية said the UAE National Guard rescued 22 crew members of Asian nationality after a fire aboard a tanker in the Gulf waters, and it said the rescued were in stable condition.
