USA beats Australia 2-0
The United States Men’s National Team returned to 2026 World Cup action on Friday, securing a 2-0 victory over Australia in a pivotal Group C matchup inside Seattle Stadium to clinch a spot in the knockout stage.

USA Today reported the U.S. advanced after a crucial second group stage match, a 2-0 win over Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle, despite Christian Pulisic missing the game due to a calf injury.
Fox News said the U.S. clinched the knockout stage with its 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle on Friday afternoon, its second win in as many games in this World Cup.
The Blazing Musket added that the U.S. wraps up the group stage on Thursday, June 25 when they return to Los Angeles Stadium to face Türkiye at 10 PM ET.
Pulisic out, goals stand
The Blazing Musket said captain Christian Pulisic was unable to suit up for the match against Australia after exiting at halftime in the Group Stage opener against Paraguay as a precaution for a calf injury.
USA Today said the Americans rolled to a shutout win and clinched a spot in the knockout round, while Fox News described the match as the U.S. team’s second win in as many games.
Fox News said Flo Balogun’s pass hit Australia’s Cameron Burgess and was directed into the net for an own goal in the 10th minute, giving the Americans an early lead.
The Blazing Musket described a second U.S. goal in the 43rd minute that was erased after an assistant referee raised a flag, then put back on the board after Felix Zwayer paused play for video review.
Fox News reported that officials initially ruled it offside, but a VAR check reversed the call, sending Seattle’s Lumen Field into a frenzy and giving Alex Freeman his first World Cup goal.
Next: Round of 32
With the knockout spot secured, USA Today said fans can start planning for potential U.S. knockout round matches, including the Round of 32 timing depending on whether the U.S. finishes first or second in Group D.

USA Today reported that if the U.S. can clinch the top spot in Group D, its Round of 32 match will take place on Wednesday, July 1, and if it finishes second, it plays on Friday, July 3.
Fox News said the U.S. is now 11-2-1 when scoring first in the World Cup and that with its 2-0 record it is in first place with six points while Australia remains with three and in second place.
The Blazing Musket said the U.S. took a 2-0 lead into halftime and made changes including Sebastian Berhalter replacing Ricardo Pepi in the 74th minute, while Gio Reyna and Haji Wright replaced McKennie and Balogun in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
USA Today also said the team’s opponent is not yet known and likely won’t be until the end of the group stage, while it noted that limited United States knockout round tickets were available with the cheapest available starting at $2,955 if it clinches the top spot in Group D.
