Carrier swap as Iran war drags

The U.S. Navy moved to deploy a different aircraft carrier to the waters off Iran to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln after families of sailors and Marines confronted military leaders about poor conditions, according to MS NOW.

During a contentious meeting in San Diego on Aug. 6, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said the USS George Washington was not considered an option for replacing the Lincoln because the U.S. has to maintain a presence in the South Pacific, but MS NOW reported that those plans changed and the Washington was moved toward Iran.

MS NOW said the Washington is now heading toward the Middle East to potentially relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has set a record for the most continuous days at sea for a Navy aircraft carrier and came under scrutiny for supply shortages, unsanitary conditions and the morale of service members on board.

President Donald Trump told reporters Friday, “No they’re not,” dismissing concerns from military family members, and he added, “That ship is moving right now — well very shortly — and it’s being replaced with another very similar ship.”

Trump dismisses mental health claims

Trump confirmed the USS Abraham Lincoln would be replaced in the Middle East and dismissed concerns about prolonged deployment conditions, telling reporters on Friday, “That ship is moving right now, or very shortly, and it's being replaced with another very similar ship.”

TRT World reported that the Lincoln has been deployed for more than 250 days, with no port call in the last 200 days, and said the carrier began its deployment in November and was redirected to the Middle East in January ahead of the U.S. war with Iran.

Democratic lawmakers demanded answers after families raised concerns about deteriorating living conditions and worsening mental health, and TRT World said Senator Richard Blumenthal raised those issues in a letter to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao.

In response to the concerns, Trump said, “No. Not nearly long enough,” while TRT World described the Lincoln as having about 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard and said some sailors reportedly tried throwing themselves into the sea.

Oversight pressure and operational stakes

As the USS George Washington heads toward the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, CBS News reported that the Navy pushed back on the notion of a mental health crisis and said, “We have not identified an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts aboard the ship.”

“We have not identified an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts aboard the ship.”

CBS News also reported that a Navy official told the outlet there has been a decrease in suicidal ideation cases as the deployment has gone on, while the Navy acknowledged the ship is operating in “a highly contested environment where traditional supply hubs in the Middle East were disrupted by combat actions.”

Democrats pressed for more information and greater visibility into conditions, and CBS News quoted Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal saying, “When a member of the military raises their right hand, they know they're going to endure some hardship.”

NPR reported that the Navy conceded the conflict created a “highly contested environment where traditional supply hubs in the Middle East were disrupted by combat actions,” leading to shortages and loss of mail aboard the aircraft carrier, and NPR said the move would leave the Pacific without a U.S. carrier presence for an unknown period of time.
