U.S. Park Police Respond After Vandals Etch “86 47” on National Mall

Federal authorities responded Thursday after large etchings of the numerals “86 47” appeared on the grounds of the National Mall, with U.S. Park Police and the D.C. fire department among those seen responding.

The Washington Post said the numerals “86 47” were visible from a tall vantage point, while the “4 wasn’t clearly etched into the grass,” and it remained unclear how the markings were made, according to the Park Police.

CBS News reported that photos taken by a Reuters photographer showed faint tracings of “86 47” in the grass with the World War II Memorial in the background, with the “8” most prominently visible and the “4” least visible.

CBS News added that U.S. Park Police said, “At approximately 11:30 a.m., U.S. Park Police responded to a report of vandalism of the west lawn of the Washington Monument,” and that grass samples were collected for testing as the investigation continued.

An Interior Department spokesperson described the markings as “deranged vandalism” and promised to “hold those responsible accountable,” while the Washington Post reported that Trump allies argued “86” could also mean to kill someone.

In response to the markings, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told CBS News, “Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible,” and CBS News said the statement also referenced “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

The Washington Post reported that the Justice Department alleged in an indictment of James B. Comey that a 2025 social media post by the former FBI director showing seashells arranged into the numbers “86 47” was an expression of intent to harm Trump.

CBS News said Comey deleted the post and that he believed the shell formation was communicating a “political message,” while also saying he did not realize some people associate the numbers with violence.

The incident was tied to a busy schedule on the National Mall, with the Washington Post noting that parachutists bearing American and POW flags descended from the sky for an aerial rehearsal for America 250 festivities.

Fox 5 DC said the numbers appeared just days before the area near the National Mall would be full of fans for a UFC match on Trump’s birthday on Sunday, and it reported that U.S. Park Police were investigating the etched “8647” in dead or discolored grass east of the World War II Memorial.

The Washington Post said the numerals seemed to be visible only from a tall vantage point and that multiple emergency vehicles encircled the grass about 1 p.m., while a Park Service helicopter circled overhead.

CBS News reported that the investigation was ongoing after Park Police collected grass samples for testing, and it quoted the Interior Department spokesperson saying, “The deranged vandalism on our National Mall will not be tolerated.”
