Strikes Canceled, Deal Promised
President Donald Trump canceled scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran on Thursday evening, saying on Truth Social that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran had been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he expected a signing “maybe in Europe” as soon as this weekend, describing the arrangement as a “great settlement” of the war with Iran.
He said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately once an agreement is signed, and he framed the memorandum of understanding as ensuring that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon.
The announcement came after earlier threats to hit Iran “very hard” and to seize Kharg Island, with Trump later saying a military operation to take Kharg would be off the table “if we sign this agreement.”
Tehran Pushes Back
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told the state-run IRNA that Iran has not yet made a final decision on an agreement with the US, and he said Iran will not compromise on its “red lines” in negotiations.
Baghaei also said the Americans kept changing their positions, and he warned that reports of a finalized agreement were “merely speculation” while Iran had “not yet made a final decision on any deal.”
Trump, meanwhile, told reporters he understood the answer was yes when asked whether Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei had approved the deal, and he said the signing could be “soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend inEurope.”
The dispute over timing and approval sharpened as Trump said Vice President JD Vance would represent the United States at the signing, while Iran said nothing had been finalized and that it would announce its position later.
What’s at Stake Next
Trump said the memorandum of understanding would ensure Iran does not have a nuclear weapon, and he also said the U.S. would lift its naval blockade and Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz once the signing takes place.
“Trump says deal to end US-Israeli war on Iran could be signed as soon as this weekend 'We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, and we’re going to be, subject to finalization of documents, which should get done over the next few days, probably have a signing, maybe in Europe,' says US president Michael Hernandez 11 June 2026•Update: 11 June 2026 WASHINGTON A deal to permanently end the US-Israeli war on Iran could be signed as soon as this weekend, President Donald Trump said Thursday in a day dominated by whiplash developments”
The Guardian reported that Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel “is not a party” to the memorandum of understanding, while stressing that any final agreement should include “the removal of enriched material” and “the cessation of Iran’s support for its terrorist proxies in the region.”
In parallel, Anadolu Ajansı said Trump named negotiators special envoy Steve Witkoff and advisor Jared Kushner for the potential signing, and it described the signing as possibly occurring “maybe in Europe” over the weekend.
With the Strait of Hormuz tied to Trump’s timeline and Iran disputing final approval, the next step in the sources is whether documents are finalized and whether Iran and the U.S. move from “conceptually” agreed points to a deal that Tehran says is not yet final.
