Strikes Near Hormuz

DW said the US launched a new round of strikes on Iran, with Iranian state media reporting blasts in southern Iran near the Strait of Hormuz after the US announcement.

DW reported that the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) said an explosion occurred in Bandar Abbas, and that blasts were also reported in Mina and Sirik and on the island of Qeshm.

DW said US Central Command (CENTCOM) began launching strikes at 5:15 p.m. ET “against multiple targets in Iran at the Commander in Chief’s direction,” describing them as “in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression.”

DW quoted US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth saying, “Central Command will be busy tonight, because President Trump said we will be hitting Iran hard, and we will be,” and said Hegseth described attacks on “key facilities” in Iran as a result of Iran not reaching a deal with the US to end the war.

Water Infrastructure Hit

Al Jazeera said the US struck targets in Iran after the downing of a US Apache helicopter close to the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, and that the US military said it targeted communications and radar facilities. Al Jazeera reported that Iranian officials said civilian infrastructure was also damaged, including two water reservoirs, and that the IRGC said US strikes had caused major damage to a telecommunications tower in Sirik and destroyed two water reservoirs there.

The Straits Times reported that on June 10, Iranian state media said thousands of Iranians in the southern port town of Sirik lost access to drinking water after US strikes hit two reservoirs in the area. The Straits Times quoted Iranian state television saying, “20,000 residents of the region have lost access to safe drinking water, and with temperatures ranging between 45 and 50 deg C, conditions have become extremely difficult and critical for local inhabitants,” and added that the destruction created “a major problem for the region’s water supply network.”

Escalation and Retaliation

Al Jazeera said the US described its attacks as “self-defence strikes” and a “proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression,” while Trump quickly blamed Iran after the helicopter incident. Al Jazeera quoted Trump writing, “I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz.”

India Today said Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired long-range missiles at four locations inside the US al-Azraq base in Jordan, and said the Guards claimed the sites included hangars used for F-35 fighter aircraft and a command-and-control facility. India Today also reported that the Guards said they were prepared to give a “crushing and decisive” answer to any new US attack, and that the exchange signalled a sharp escalation in hostilities between Washington and Tehran.
