HLX slips at GameSoundCon
Valve composer and audio artist Mike Morasky mentioned the codename "HLX" during a Q&A panel at GameSoundCon, a conference devoted to "the art, technology, and business of game audio." Morasky tied the three-letter reference to Valve's HDR audio setup, saying, "HLX has its own version, so on and so forth."
The moment was an apparent slip-up that changed the lack of any public sign from inside Valve that a Half-Life project was in development. 80 Level said the codename "HLX" resurfaced during GameSoundCon and that Morasky's voice "instantly became weaker" as he rushed to wrap up the speech by saying, "and so on and so forth."
Whispers and social amplification
David Feise, seated next to Morasky, whispered "nice work" after Morasky said "HLX has their own version" during the panel on "Valve's Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine." Feise then ended the answer as Morasky laughed nervously, saying Groups, which Morasky had been talking about leading up to the HLX remark, "is its own one-hour talk, so come talk to us about that afterwards."
A colleague's quiet "nice work" response led fans to read it as a passive-agressive retort to Morasky's slip up. Gabe Follower shared the remarks on X and Morasky told the audience, "Deadlock has its own HDR version, HLX has its own version, and so on," while discussing HDR technology.
What HLX does not confirm
Morasky did not explain what HLX is beyond its place in Valve's HDR discussion, and La Razón said the phrase "does not by itself confirm that HLX is Half-Life 3." The comment does not settle whether HLX is a numbered sequel, and Vandal likewise said "it does not allow determining the commercial title of HLX, its platforms, its format, or its release date."
The HLX mention revamps the conversation around Valve's new title in the Half-Life universe, while also saying, "We can't be sure, however, that it's the third installment in the series." The codename had never been referenced in public by a Valve employee until now, even though it had shown up in Valve engine code since at least 2024.
