Washington, D.C. Police Investigate Two Northwest Shootings, Injuring 5-Year-Old Boy and Two Men

Washington, D.C. police investigated two separate shooting incidents in the city’s Northwest on Tuesday, with one incident centered on the 400 block of N Street, NW and another on the 3300 block of Mt. Pleasant Street, NW.

The Metropolitan Police Department announced, in a post on X, "Alert: Shooting investigation in the 400 block of N Street, NW," and in a separate post said, "Alert: Shooting investigation in the 3300 block of Mt. Pleasant Street, NW. This incident separate of the incident at 400 N Street, NW."

Xinhua reported that "Two shootings were reported late Tuesday in Washington, D.C., and investigation is underway, according to the D.C. Police Department."

Local reporting tied the N Street shooting to about 7 p.m., describing it as occurring near the 400 block of N Street NW.

NBC4 Washington reported that a 5-year-old boy and two men were shot Tuesday night in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood, and that all three victims were expected to survive, according to police.

WJLA similarly said two adults and a young boy were taken to the hospital after a shooting in Northwest, D.C., shortly after 7 p.m. in the 400 block of N Street, Northwest, and that all three were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

In the 400 block of N Street, NW incident, NBC4 Washington said two armed men fired indiscriminately at a group of people standing about 100 to 150 feet away about 7 p.m. near the 400 block of N Street NW.

The report said the child had been playing in a courtyard when he was shot, and people at a sports field heard the gunshots and ducked to the ground.

NBC4 Washington quoted Interim Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffery Carroll saying, "When the officers were on the scene initially, they were advised that a child had also been shot and had been transported from the location by a parent."

WJLA reported that the two men were found injured on the scene and that a 5-year-old boy was already taken to the hospital, with officials saying the child had been playing in the courtyard and was shot.

WJLA added that police said they were looking for two people who wore dark clothing and ran away from the scene after the shooting.

NBC4 Washington said police believed the shooting was not targeted because of the distance, and it said police were unable to provide much of a description of the gunmen except that they wore dark clothing as they ran from the area on foot.

The second incident was reported in the 3300 block of Mt. Pleasant Street, NW, and multiple outlets described it as separate from the N Street shooting.

WJLA said police confirmed another unrelated shooting in the 3300 block of Mt. Pleasant Street, Northwest, that left two people injured, and it said the shooting stemmed from an argument.

FOX 5 DC said officers responded to reports of a shooting around 7:15 p.m. in the 3300 block of Mt. Pleasant Street NW, and it reported that police were investigating whether the two had an argument before the shooting.

DC News Now said MPD determined that there was an argument between the suspect and one of the victims, and that they knew each other, adding that during the fight the suspect took out a gun and began shooting.

DC News Now also stated that the two shootings occurred five minutes apart from each other.

FOX 5 DC reported that investigators were searching for an 18-year-old male suspect described as wearing a black mask and all black clothing, and that the suspect was reportedly last seen riding a Lime scooter.

As police investigated the shootings, local officials and community voices focused on safety measures in the Shaw area.

NBC4 Washington reported that people in the neighborhood said they had felt tension was rising in the area and that they talked to police about it.

The report quoted Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Nicole Shea saying, "People in Shaw in general deserve better, but the people at the Second Northwest Cooperative absolutely need more safety measures. They need more for this community," and it added that she said, "Folks have kids. They need to be able to feel like their kids can play outside."

NBC4 Washington also said police were listening and targeted the area for additional patrols.

WJLA reported that the Metropolitan Police Department officers have increased patrol in the area, and it described the shooting as taking place shortly after 7 p.m. in the 400 block of N Street, Northwest.

WJLA said officials said they will continue adding more officers and resources in the area.

Police continued investigating both shootings and asked the public for information, while outlets reported that MPD had not released certain details about victim conditions.
