Has Burnham opened a can of worms by wanting ‘honest discussion’ over Brexit? VOTE NOW

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.3 findings

Comment now Next ANDY Burnham has opened the door to bringing back freedom of movement – a major plank of the Brexit vote. The Prime Minister said he wants to have an “honest discussion” on free movement and closer ties to the EU. His starting point will be holding a summit with the EU where he looks for a better deal since leaving the bloc. He is committed Labour’s 2024 manifesto which said there would be no return to the single market, customs union and freedom of movement.

However, this could all change if Mr Burnham wins an election and returns to Downing Street with his own mandate .

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The Sun says the manifesto pledge "could all change" if Burnham wins an election with his own mandate. It never reports that in the same interviews he suggested a referendum would be needed to revive free movement and said he would never move ahead of the public on Brexit. Without this a reader may think an election win alone is his route back to free movement.

The Sun turns Andy Burnham's call for an "honest discussion" on free movement into a reader poll framed only by his opponents. Nigel Farage's claim that free movement could bring 450 million people here to undercut British labour stands with nothing against it. The article also leaves out Burnham's own reasons and his reported pledge not to move ahead of the public.

  1. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Minor

“Nigel Farage said the move could pave the way for 450 million people coming here and undercutting British labour”

    Why this matters
The Sun prints Farage's figure of "450 million people coming here" and his claim of "undercutting British labour" and moves straight on to more criticism. Nothing in the article tests either claim.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking free movement would bring a large share of the EU's population to Britain and would push down British workers' pay.
    The context
The 450 million figure is the population of the bloc, not a forecast of arrivals. The government's Migration Advisory Committee found migration is not a major factor in UK-born workers' wages. Burnham himself described earlier EU migration as people who came and then went back. The article gives the reader none of this.

  2. One side gets the space

    Minor

“Kemi Badenoch added that this was another example of Burnham’s “foot in mouth syndrome” of speaking before engaging brain.”

    Why this matters
After Farage, The Sun gives the next quoted reaction to Kemi Badenoch's personal jibe. Burnham's case appears only as the two words "honest discussion".
    The impression it gives
A reader learns what Burnham's opponents think of him but not what he actually said about immigration or why.
    The context
Burnham explained that immigration had changed since Brexit and that earlier EU migration was people who came and then went back. The article quotes none of his reasoning before asking readers to vote.
