About this analysis

Sky News reports that an 18-year-old moped rider died and a 16-year-old passenger was critically injured in a collision in Sheerness after officers on foot patrol approached them, and that the case has gone to the police watchdog. It attributes the account of events to Kent Police and matches what the BBC and the Mirror reported. Nothing in it misleads.

What it gets right

  • “Kent Police said that as officers walked towards the rider, the vehicle left via an alleyway adjacent to the leisure centre and was subsequently involved in a collision.”

Sky attributes the sequence of events to Kent Police rather than stating the force's version as its own established fact. That matters while the police conduct in the approach is under investigation.

  • “A mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and an investigation is under way.”

Sky tells the reader that the police role in the death is the subject of an independent investigation, so the reader knows the officers' approach is under scrutiny.

  • “was taken to a London hospital where he remains in a critical condition”

Sky gives the passenger's age and the gravity of his injuries. The reader is not left with the softer impression of the headline's "injured" alone.
