In Meadow Well, Northumbria Police says the 'pre-arranged' violence relates to 'misinformation in the community' about reports of a house in multiple occupation (HMO).

But these reports are false, say police and the region's mayor, as the area is actually planned to be used as a supermarket. Northumbria Police has issued a statement in the wake of the Meadow Well violence this Bonfire Night (November 5), saying: "We’re currently on scene in the Waterville Road area of Meadow Well in North Tyneside in response to reports of anti-social behaviour and other violent disorder. "Emergency services in the area have been subjected to violent attacks including having bricks, missiles, and fireworks thrown at them. "We believe the disorder has been pre-arranged and relates to misinformation in the community that the completed building is going to be used as a House of Multi-occupancy (HMO) – which is not accurate.

We are sharing this information to stop speculation in the community which may lead to further disorder. "If you've got any information which could assist us to identify anyone involved, please send us a direct message, quoting: NP-20261105-0493." Mayor McGuinness issued a damning statement in the past few minutes, saying: "I’m disgusted by scenes of clearly pre-arranged violence in Meadow Well tonight, carried out by a miniority of idiots. "These thugs apparently thought they were attacking a planned HMO, when in fact, it was destined to be a supermarket.

"This dangerous misinformation and the way it spreads needs to be tackled and the stupidity has to stop - there is no excuse for it. "Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service go to work every day to protect us. They deserve better than this and so do the residents of the Meadow Well who have had to endure it." A fire has broken out amid scenes of violence near Newcastle (Image: ChronicleLive/UGC) In Glasgow, police were called to Greenside Street, in the Provanmill area of the city, at around 7.55pm tonight.

The alarm was raised after officers received reports of a man being injured on the street, the Sun has reported. Ambulance crews raced to the scene alongside cops, but shortly after they arrived, they were attacked with fireworks. The force has confirmed that the shocking scenes left one of the ambulance staff with a minor injury. Specially trained cops who were part of Operation Amberlight – a taskforce to protect other emergency crews – were deployed to the area and a man was arrested.

Video footage from the scene shows massive flames leaping from the burnt-out police van in the middle of the street. Smoke was seen billowing from the motor as wood and broken bits of debris lay strewn around the road. Several large fires could be spotted behind the burning vehicle as yobs loitered around the street. A masked group also set off fireworks in front of a block of flats in Glasgow’s east end. They wore all black and fired multiple rockets into the air over the area in Carntyne.

Police were seen at a nearby school earlier that night. A Police Scotland statement said: “Police in Glasgow responded alongside the Scottish Ambulance Service to a report of an injured male in Greenside Street at around 7.55pm on Thursday, 5 November. “During this time, both crews were targeted with fireworks, resulting in a police vehicle being set alight and seriously damaged. “One of the ambulance staff sustained a minor injury. “Operation Amberlight specialist resources were deployed, and one male has been arrested.

“Inquiries are ongoing, and police maintain a presence in the area.” In the Colinton area of the Scottish capital, yobs torched bins and launched fireworks at cops and firefighters, the Sun reports conintue. No one was injured during the incident. Speaking about the incident in Edinburgh, a spokesperson for the force added: “Around 5.30pm on Thursday, November 5 2026, we received a report of a group of youths creating a blockage in the road on Oxgangs Road North, Edinburgh.

“Officers attended, and fireworks were set off in their direction, but no injuries have been reported. “Several small fires in bins and the park were extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. “Officers remain in the area, and inquiries are ongoing to trace those involved.” Bonfire Night UK riots Edinburgh Share Article Share Article Facebook X LinkedIn Reddit Bluesky Email Copy Link Link copied Add us as preferred source Comments

What we found (1)

The Express reports Bonfire Night attacks on police, ambulance crews and firefighters in Meadow Well, Glasgow and Edinburgh, attributing the details to Northumbria Police, Police Scotland and the North East mayor. It clearly reports that the Meadow Well disorder was pre-arranged and driven by false claims about an HMO. One small error: it places an Edinburgh incident a few miles outside the city when its own quoted police statement puts it inside.

  1. Makes a false claim

    Minor

“A few miles outside of Edinburgh”

    Why this matters
The Express places the bin fires and the firework attack on police and firefighters outside Edinburgh.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the incident happened in a separate place near Edinburgh, not in the city.
    The context
The article itself later places it in the Colinton area of the Scottish capital, and the Police Scotland statement it quotes gives Oxgangs Road North, Edinburgh. The error is small and does not change who did what.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“creating a blockage in the road on Oxgangs Road North, Edinburgh”
    • Elsewhere in the article“In the Colinton area of the Scottish capital”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “But these reports are false, say police and the region's mayor, as the area is actually planned to be used as a supermarket.”

The Express states plainly that the rumour behind the Meadow Well disorder was false and gives the source. The misinformation does not go unanswered.

  • “Northumbria Police say they have been subjected to bricks, missiles, and fireworks being thrown at them as they repond to 'pre-arranged' disorder”

The article attributes the account of the attacks and the claim of pre-arrangement to the police force that made them, rather than asserting them in its own voice.

  • “The force has confirmed that the shocking scenes left one of the ambulance staff with a minor injury.”

The Express gives the injury as the police confirmed it, a minor injury to one person. It does not inflate the harm to fit the headline.
