An audience member expressed her concern for her young boy growing up in a world where global tensions are so high.

She said: "Being a mum of a seven year old, global tensions really worry me, what are we doing in terms of conscription for when he is 18. He hasn't been part of any of this and he hasn't done any of it and it just concerns me that when he's 18 he's going to be in a position, so what are we doing for future generations?" She added: "His school already has a policy where they do armed forces in secondary school and that concerns me because of the way the world's looking at the moment."

To the bigger point I think there's a policy and a political thing that we can hopefully see coming out of these elections in America."

What we found (1)

The Express reports a Question Time audience member's worry about conscription and Lucy Powell's reply, quoting both at length. The one problem is the headline, which calls the mother "terrified" when her own quoted words describe worry and concern. Nothing else in the piece misleads.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “Terrified mum”

    Why this matters
The headline calls the audience member "Terrified", a stronger word than anything she says in the article.
    The impression it gives
A reader expects a frightened, distressed parent and a show of fear on air.
    The context
In her quoted words she says global tensions "really worry" her and that the school policy "concerns" her. The article's own body calls her "a concerned mother". "Terrified" is the outlet's word, not hers.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“global tensions really worry me”
    • Elsewhere in the article“that concerns me because of the way the world's looking”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “She soon corrected herself to say: "I mean I hope we will never get to a point where we've got conscription necessary in this country too.”

The Express quotes Powell's first answer and her correction in full, so the reader sees exactly what she said rather than a paraphrase.

  • “so what are we doing for future generations?”

The audience member's question is given in her own words at length, not summarised.
