Times of Israel, on Gaza, 25 October 2026

The Times of Israel reports an Israeli TV excerpt about a Hamas threat conveyed through a UN official, and in doing so tells its reader that Israeli forces are advancing and striking Gaza daily without once saying that anyone has been killed. It states Israel's own condition for withdrawal as settled fact, even though Israel's defence minister has said Israel will not withdraw even if Hamas disarms, and it closes with the Israeli military's justification for its daily strikes with nothing set against it.

What we found

  1. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Serious

“continues to carry out daily strikes on what it says are terror operatives readying imminent attacks”

    What the words do
The article's final line of reporting hands the Israeli military the last word on who its daily strikes hit, with nothing set against it and no mention of anyone being hurt or killed.
What a reader comes away believing
That Israel's daily strikes in Gaza pick off armed men about to attack, and that nobody else is affected.
    What is actually the case
Under the same "ceasefire" Israeli fire has killed at least 1,127 Palestinians, more than 260 of them children, with attacks recorded on 252 of 279 days, including strikes on a funeral procession, water queues and displacement tents. The article gives no toll and no counter to the military's description of the dead.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Israeli forces have expanded their control westward of last year's ceasefire line and strike Gaza almost daily; the military says it hits operatives planning attacks. At least 1,127 Palestinians, more than 260 of them children, have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire was declared.

  2. States one side's claim as fact

    Serious

“Israel refusing to withdraw from any part of Gaza until that condition is met”

    What the words do
States in the outlet's own voice that Israel's refusal to withdraw is conditional on Hamas disarming, presenting Israel's stated position as the established reason the plan has stalled.
What a reader comes away believing
That Hamas's disarmament is all that stands between the present situation and an Israeli withdrawal.
    What is actually the case
Israel's defence minister has said the army will never leave all of Gaza, will hold its zones indefinitely and will not withdraw even if Hamas disarms, and the agreed later phases, including the international force and further withdrawal, have not happened. The article presents none of this.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Trump's plan has stalled: Hamas refuses to disarm, while Israel says it will not withdraw, with Defence Minister Katz stating the military will never leave all of Gaza and will not pull back even if Hamas disarms.

  3. Hedges the documented record

    Minor

“two years after the Hamas-led onslaught that sparked the Gaza war”

    What the words do
Names the whole of Israel's assault on Gaza as a "war" caused by 7 October, in the outlet's own voice, while the article goes on to report Israeli control of over 60 per cent of the Strip and daily strikes.
What a reader comes away believing
That what is happening in Gaza is a war Hamas started, with no finding against Israel attached to it.
    What is actually the case
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry found on 16 September 2025 that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, and the ICJ has ordered provisional measures in the genocide case. The article never uses the word, anywhere.

  4. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article reports an Israeli advance past the ceasefire line and daily strikes but never says that Israeli fire has killed at least 1,127 Palestinians, more than 260 of them children, since the ceasefire was declared, with attacks on 252 of 279 counted days. Without this a reader takes the advance and the daily strikes to be bloodless movement on a map.

  5. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article blames the stalling of the plan on Hamas's refusal to disarm and Israel's withdrawal condition, leaving out that the agreed later phases never began: no soldier of the international stabilisation force has deployed and no further Israeli withdrawal has taken place. Without this a reader believes the only unmet step is disarmament.

  6. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article presents the Yellow Line as the line that separates the two sides under the deal, without noting that satellite analysis found more than half of the mapped markers placed deeper inside Gaza than the agreed map. Without this a reader treats the "moving of the Yellow Line" as only a Hamas complaint.

Hamas said to threaten Oct. 7-style attack over IDF advance in Gaza, PA’s nixed election

Hamas reportedly told a UN official earlier this month that it was prepared to carry out an October 7-style attack in Israel, the West Bank or abroad, following the IDF’s expansion past the Gaza ceasefire line and the Palestinian Authority’s cancellation of legislative elections in November. UN humanitarian coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov was said to convey the message to Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj. Gen. Yoram Halevy, who wrote Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz that the threat was unusually blunt. According to an excerpt published by Channel 13 Saturday from Halevy’s memo, Alakbarov said he met in his Gaza office two weeks ago with senior Hamas officials who asked him to convey to Israel that “IDF activity in the Gaza Strip, the moving of the Yellow Line , and the cancellation of the elections by the PA are leading Hamas to lose control in the field.” The Yellow Line separates Israeli forces from the Hamas-controlled area in the Strip’s west under the ceasefire deal that Israel and the terror group agreed to last October, . Seeking to assure international backers that the PA could govern postwar Gaza, PA President Mahmoud Abbas had set legislative elections for November 28, but earlier this month postponed them until September 2027, citing “obstacles posed by Israeli measures.” Get The Times of Israel's Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories Newsletter email address Get it By signing up, you agree to the terms The PA has not held legislative elections since 2006, when Hamas won and then violently ousted Abbas’s Fatah faction from Gaza. (AP/Mahmoud Illean) The excerpt published by Channel 13 said Hamas officials “made clear” to Alakbarov that “they are unwilling” to put up with the Israeli encroachment and with the suspension of PA elections. “Against this backdrop, they threatened that, as they see fit, Hamas is ready to again carry out an attack such as the October 7 attack, and that it is prepared to act in this vein on any front in which this becomes possible,” in Israel, the West Bank or abroad, according to the excerpt. Advertisement It added that “this is an unusual threat message, which hasn’t been previously conveyed in this level of bluntness and directness.” The Israeli security establishment is checking whether the threatened attack is feasible given the IDF’s presence in the Gaza Strip. Israel currently controls over 60% of the territory, with Hamas the de facto ruler of the rest. (AP/Ariel Schalit) The Ynet news site, which first reported the message from Alakbarov, said Israel’s security cabinet was briefed that Hamas has ramped up preparations for renewed fighting, including by stockpiling weapons and moving them to civilian areas. Hamas assumes Israel’s hands are tied on launching a large-scale operation until after the November 3 US midterm elections, Ynet said. Implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza has stalled, with Hamas refusing to disarm and .
